Hello Beautiful Ones,
Just as we clear the clutter in our closets each season, it’s important to chunk old makeup. Especially as we approach Fall after a sweaty Summer. YUCK! Have you been using the same powder puff in that compact since the Spring? If you’ve been breaking out lately — this could be the culprit!
From the moment you open a product and expose it to air it begins to expire. Over time, ingredients become toxic and it’s equal to applying straight bacteria to your skin which can create infection and premature aging.
Here’s the life span of the main products we use:
- Eyeshadows: 12 to 18 months
- Powder: 2 years
- Foundation: 1 year
- Lipstick & lipgloss: 1 year
- Mascara: 3 months
- Blush: 12 to 19 months
- Makeup sponges: Replace weekly
- Makeup brushes: Clean weekly
I’m a self-proclaimed lipgloss addict and recently cleaned out my purse to find a total of 6 tubes. Really? I know I’m not the only one. A few tips for keeping your lips and face healthy is to pay attention to the texture, smell and any color changes to your makeup. Once there’s a slight change- chunk it! As the ingredients in makeup gets old, it can turn rancid and smells awful. If you have had a cold, cough or cold sore and used a gloss while sick- chunk it! Limit swapping lipgloss, eyeliner and mascara with your friends. Although we may appear to be healthy, we could innocently be spreading germs that could cause serious issues.
Because I only really use foundation when I’m on camera, it is easy for me to keep a bottle forever. When I buy a new one, I take a sharpie and write the date on the bottom of the bottle so I’ll know when to chunk it.
