Did you have a mini breakdown in your closet this morning because among the cram packed clothes you “didn’t have anything to wear”? Been there, done that. You try a few things on that end up on the floor, the heat rises to your face, you can’t control it, you may drop a curse word (or 3), you yell at your reflection in the mirror and now you have to reapply deodorant. WHEWWWW. EXHALE. One of the ways I keep my sanity in the closet is to dress for what mood I’m in. I think we get so confused by what we see in the magazines, on celebrities and fashion bloggers that we get paralyzed when we try to put on our own outfits. It’s great to get inspiration from stylish people, but then make it your own!
Wear the hot pink shoes.
Wear the high pony.
Wear the polka dot skirt.
Try that thing you’ve been hesitant about. You know that “thing” you have tried a few times, but weren’t brave enough to actually leave the house wearing. Ok, yes- it may not work. But HEY— it might just be TOTALY FABULOUS! I’m often asked to describe my style. Hmm– The only way I can think to describe it is “Multi-Personality” because I dress for my moods. One day I’m feeling like a rocker chick, the next day boho and the particular day of the above photo– I was thinking of those fun Elvis movies from the 60’s set in Hawaii. Loved the actresses (his love interests) wardrobes in the 60’s! Bold floral prints are everywhere right now so go try it.
But, most days I’m channeling the 70’s era mixed with a few current trends. I’m grateful that being a self-employed TV Host/Coach I have the liberty to wear whatever I want. I get it, many of you may not be able to wear a Def Leppard concert tee to work, but you can certainly express yourself in your personal life.
What about you?
What’s your style?
Stuck in a rut?
Last Saturday I did my yearly Spring closet shake up. Usually I do this by March, but with all the traveling I’m a bit late. Its takes energy and creativity so do this when you’re feeling it so it’s fun instead of overwhelming. Put on some fun music and shake it all up. Pull things out that haven’t moved in a while. Try them on. Mix and match. That floral jumpsuit in the photo is actually 2 years old. I forgot I even had it until I shook up my closet and found it hanging behind a bunch of long dresses.
Just remember– Do you! Do your thing! Don’t feel like you have to be a style sheep and do what the masses are doing. Don’t buy labels just because everyone else is. Clones are so boring. It’s great to get inspiration but then make it your own.
YOU CAN’T BUY STYLE!
Just because that dress is a label and cost $2K doesn’t mean it looks great on everyone.
What’s that THING you’re going to try this week?
