G’day Gorgeous!

We’re back from an amazing trip to my hubby’s homeland of Australia. Such a wonderful time with his family! Family truly is everything. We helped his parents move from the mainland over to the stunning state of Tasmania to be closer to the grandkids. A beautiful new chapter for everyone and we will make it our 2nd home!

Aside from the family time, one of the things I love most about traveling is learning about the local foods, plants, animal life (we got to feed kangaroos and learned all about the nasty Tasmanian Devil.. yes, it’s a real thing not just a cartoon character), fashion and beauty rituals. For months, I’ve been hearing about the beauty benefits of Manuka Honey which is native to Tasmania and the neighboring country of New Zealand. Of course, I had to pick some up and give it a try.

To recoup from 36 hours of travel and intense jet lag, I’ve been detoxing my body with lots of ACV & lemon water, epsom salt & baking soda bath, cat naps, light walks and a DIY mask with the Manuka Honey. Love that it lived up to the hype!  Here is the recipe I used:

  • 2 Tablespoons of Manuka Honey
  • 2 big dashes (about 1/2 a Teaspoon) of Cinnamon
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of Rosewater (make sure not to use too much of the mixture will get too runny)

Simply mix together in a ceramic or glass bowl and apply all over a dry clean face. You can use a brush or just use your fingertips like I did! Let it set for about 20 minutes then use a warm wet washcloth to remove. Use a cotton pad saturated with rosewater to get any residual stickiness off. Apply your usual moisturizer.

Cinnamon is an antiseptic so it will reduce the bacteria that causes acne. It also reduces inflammation and redness, stimulates circulation, exfoliates and revitalizes the skin by drawing blood and oxygen to the surface of your skin, leaving it clear and glowing. WooHoo!

Manuka honey, produced in New Zealand and Tasmania, AU by bees that pollinate the Manuka bush (which is a Tea Tree variety), is one of the most unique and beneficial forms of honey in the world. There are many Manuka honey uses that range from healing sore throats and digestive illnesses, to curing Staph infections and gingivitis.

What makes Manuka honey different is its amazing nutritional profile. Regular raw honey is already known for its tremendous nutritional and immune boosting abilities. Generally speaking, the typical raw unfiltered honey is a rich source of:

  • Amino acids
  • B vitamins (B6, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid)
  • Calcium
  • Copper
  • Iron
  • Magnesium
  • Manganese
  • Phosphorus
  • Potassium
  • Sodium
  • Zinc

Yet with Manuka honey, the nutritional content is up to 4 times that of normal flower honeys. This is what is called the Unique Manuka Factor.

Unique Manuka Factor

In 1981, researchers at the New Zealand University of Waikato discovered that Manuka honey has a considerably higher level of enzymes than regular honey. These enzymes create a natural hydrogen peroxide that works as an antibacterial. Some strains of this New Zealand honey are particularly rich in hydrogen peroxide, methylglyoxal and dihydroxyacetone.

This medicinal trilogy helps make up what is referred to as the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF), a global standard in identifying and measuring the antibacterial strength of Manuka. (3) Essentially, the UMF is a guarantee that the honey being sold is of a medicinal quality.

UMF is not found in the nectar of all Manuka flowers and, comparatively speaking, regular Manuka only contains the hydrogen peroxide antibacterial property that is common to most types of honey.

What separates UMF Manuka from other Manuka varieties is that it has both the natural hydrogen peroxide and its own natural UMF antibacterial property, which greatly enhances it effectiveness. The UMF properties of Manuka is extremely stable and, unlike the hydrogen peroxide common in most honey, is not easily destroyed by heat, light and enzymes in the body.

How to Verify Genuine UMF Manuka Honey

The minimum UMF rating recognized is UMF5, however, it is not considered beneficial unless it carries a UMF 10+ level of antibacterial activity in the honey. Anything ranging from UMF10-UMF15 is a useful level, and anything UMF16 and up is considered a superior quality.

Genuine UMF Manuka Honey will have these four things:

  • It will have a UMF trademark clearly labeled on the front of the container.
  • It will be from a New Zealand UMF licensed company and labelled in New Zealand.
  • It will have the UMF company’s name and license number on the label.
  • It will have a UMF rating number of 5-16+. If it is labeled without the UMF or without a number, then it is not the genuine article.

This means that a UMF rating of 20+ is equivalent in strength to a 20% solution of phenol. The ideal UMF rating varies depending on your purpose, but laboratory studies have shown that manuka honey with a non-peroxide activity level of UMF®12 to UMF®15 is effective against a wide range of very resistant bacteria.

Here is an explanation of what manuka honey UMF you should use:

0-4 Non-therapeutic

4-9 Maintenance level with general honey health benefits

10-14 Supports natural healing and bacterial balance

15+ Superior levels of phenols that are highly therapeutic but shouldn’t exceed taking 1 tbsp at a time

Beach Please! Or Just Use This Bronzer

Hey Sassafrass!

One of the questions I am asked most often is “how do you get your skin to glow like that”? If you have watched my beauty videos, you know I am a diehard bronzer and contour lover. I believe everyone looks healthier with a pop of bronzer. Just sayin’.  I’m sure even Gwen Stefani, who is known for her porcelain complexion, uses a touch of it. As a beauty junkie, I am always trying new products and companies send me cool new things to try. Lucky me!

You know I love the Heroes Beauty line and pretty much can’t live without their SUNGLO Face & Body Bronzer.  As Summer approaches, we all want to match our tanned bodies with our face without actually tanning our face. It’s truly an art I’ve finally found the magic combo for me.  I add one small pump of the Heroes Sunglo to my It Cosmetics CC Cream and WooHoo, hello smooth, glowy and sun kissed skin.

ICYMI, here’s my candid beauty v-log on the CC Cream:

Why AUDACIOUS is my 2017 Word of the Year

Hello Gorgeous!

You know I consider myself a life-long learner and am constantly on the search for new thought leaders, hard hitting messages and basically anyone I can learn from. Although I coach and mentor women, it’s vital that I stay filled up myself. A few years ago, I stumbled upon Terri Savelle Foy’s YouTube Channel and could not stop watching her videos. She’s a fellow Dallas gal and incorporates entrepreneurial tips with Biblical principals. Simply, AWESOME!

She’s also a firm believer in the power of dreams, focus and vision boards. In December 2016, when I was praying about my vision board and plans for 2017 she spoke on being AUDACIOUS in one of her videos. Voila.. that was my word for the year!  I just received her newsletter (see below) and had to share it with you. I double dog dare YOU to be more audacious. Go big or go home!

There is one thing that may be the most important factor in determining what kind of success you have in your life.

It’s probably not what you think.

It’s not your education. It’s not your bank balance. It’s not your family, your job, or your fitness.

All of those things are good, but I believe what matters most is . . .your audacity!

Some people only think of audacity as brash, arrogant, and rude; the audacity I’m talking about is bold, courageous, and determined.

Years ago I would have never been described as audacious. I was so consumed with insecurity and fear. With God’s help, my life is completely transformed and I want the same for you.

Let me share with you some areas I’ve found it’s important to develop a godly audacity in.

First, you must develop the audacity to believe in yourself.

Do you have the audacity to believe in the dreams God’s placed in your heart? Do you have the boldness to think they could actually happen? What do you have the courage to pursue?

Someone once said that the worst day in heaven would be if God gave us a glimpse of what we could have had, could have done, and could have been, but we gave up.

I want you to develop the audacity to do what God’s put in your heart to do . . . regardless of your current circumstances!

My dad was a simple automotive paint and body repair man when he surrendered his life to the Lord. He was in much debt, with a struggling marriage, and a failing business. At a point of desperation, he cried out to God saying, “Lord, I’m a failure! I’m a nobody. What would you want with me?”

He heard the Lord say . . .

“Don’t worry about it, son. I’m a master

at making champions out of nobodies.”

He started to believe that God could use a paint and body repair man to impact the world. He started to see himself as a champion. He developed audacity to do great things for God!

The same change can take place in you. I want you to realize that you are a masterpiece created by the very hand of Almighty God, you are not a mistake, it’s not too late, and you have what it takes to do great things!

You also must have the audacity to believe each day matters.

It’s the seemingly little, insignificant things you do on a daily basis that propels you to the top. It’s also the little habits you don’t develop that will continue to keep you from achieving your dreams.

You’ve probably heard the saying, “You can’t hire someone to do your push-ups!” You have to do the work.

You can’t hire someone to listen to faith-building messages for you, read books for you, confess your goals and declarations, plan your day, listen to the Holy Spirit, and develop your relationship with the Lord.

Every 24-hours you have is a gift from God and an opportunity to grow and prepare for your dreams.

When you have the audacity to believe today matters, you will do what it takes to get the most out of your day. That’s a big key difference between successful people and others.

Remember this: What’s simple to do is also simple not to do. So, stick with your positive daily habits and you will get positive results.

Hey Savvy Shopper!

As a beauty junkie, it’s always a challenge to choose the healthiest products because many of the hot, must have items are loaded with highly toxic ingredients. I do my best to choose what’s best for my health and now it will be even easier! Last week, my dear friend and lash stylist- Kathy Mitchell, co-owner of Bella Lash Boutique and essential oil enthusiast- told me about the Think Dirty App. It is simply brilliant! Go download it now. You scan the barcode on any cosmetic or personal care product and it will show a rating from 1-10 on carcinogenic levels (cancer causing), developmental & reproductive/hormone toxicity and allergy & immunity toxicity. Many companies “claim” to be organic and all-natural, but are not! Ladies, we must educate ourselves especially those of us who are beauty junkies and use several products a day. If I counted every product I use from toothpaste, deodorant, body lotion, shampoo, hair masks, body wash, facial creams, perfumes, hairspray and we haven’t even gotten to my makeup vanity yet. Yikes!  Kathy has lost 55 lbs by eating cleaner and changing out the toxic products she was using. Our bodies carry so much inflammation which effects everything from our metabolism to our hormones.

The founder of the app, Lily Tse comes from a family with a history of cancer. She began researching the carcinogenic and hormone disrupting ingredients in beauty products:

“I never realized the environmental impact cosmetics had on our health, until I watched Annie Leonard’s “Story of Cosmetics”, which examined the pervasive use of toxic chemicals in our everyday personal care products.

There are hormone disruptor chemicals in many products that have been possibly linked to breast cancer. I was shocked the cosmetics industry was not regulated like the food and drug sectors. And like most women, my lipgloss and shampoo are products I would never think to describe as “toxic” or could contain cancer-causing chemicals.

Finding safer alternatives for myself was a huge challenge. Although many products are labeled “all-natural” or “organic”, there is little transparency in labeling cosmetics. There was also no real tool out there for consumers to find information easily. With my background in design and marketing, I wanted to develop and create something not only for myself but for others as well, and that’s how Think Dirty® was founded.” For more, go to https://www.thinkdirtyapp.com.

Did you download the app yet?

Hey Hey Sista!

Every once in a while, I browse through my library of YouTube videos to see what the heck I’ve put out there over the years. The awesome thing about a blog and/or blog is that you have a log and diary of your life. It’s cathartic to go back and see your growth smack in front of your face complete with the various hair colors and makeup attempts. Thank God I found a good HD foundation!

At this point in my life, I’ve become the type that keeps my head down and does the daily work God places in front of me. It truly ROCKS to be purpose + mission driven because you get more laser-beamed focused and ignore the peripheral BS. It also keeps you out of your head, out of your own way and out from being stuck in that whiny, woe-is-me, somewhat depressed place I marinated in for so many years. Lawd help me! You’ve got a task, an assignment, a job to do here and when you get busy with that– life is such a fun  adventure. Funny, how quickly we forget how far we’ve come because we are always looking forward. This is the ONE time I give myself permission to look back in the past!

Although this video is set around Thanksgiving a few years ago, it is still an IMPORTANT message TODAY. I pray whatever place you’re in- the cocoon, the transitional middle place or if you are soaring completely in your purpose- this message encourages you!

I would love to hear your thoughts.

RIP ZOE: Tribute To Our Sassy SOS Mascot

Dear Precious Friends,

With a heavy, but healing heart I must share that 2 weeks ago today our furry daughter, Zoe went to puppy heaven. What a quirky little diva she was. Shaking my head with a huge grin on my face. She loved being wherever mama was even when I was filming SOS videos! If you have been part of this journey from the beginning then you have seen our sassy scene stealer in many episodes.

I wanted a dog for years, but was living an unsettled gypsy lifestyle so as soon as Aaron and I got married (and I felt somewhat like a grown up) we got our little deaf, high maintenance long-haired chihuahua. “Zoe” was my favorite baby name for a girl and since I wasn’t sure if I would ever have kids– we named her Zoe which means “life” in Greek. So she has been our baby from day one and was truly my spiritual guide dog. Some may think that idea is “woo woo” but she was my trusted companion every single day on my healing journey. She snuggled up beside me during many journaling sessions and watching episode after episode of Joyce Meyer and TD Jakes. Many things are inconsistent when you begin your spiritual journey. One day you’re up and can see the light, one day you’re in dark pain with a heart that is cracking open. The one consistent thing, besides God’s presence, was Zoe. She was there loving me unconditionally. I truly believe she had a job to do in being my spiritual companion and she did it very well. I’m sure God is so pleased with his sweet little creation! *Kleenex Please*

[Aaron loved her like crazy! This was the day we brought her home April 2004.]

If you have gone through the loss of a furry family member then you know the deep absence and void that is left in the home. I hug you all. ((Group hug)) We never realize how much energy and life they bring to our sacred space. Each day is getting better and we are focusing on the beautiful life she had!  She was spoiled silly especially when we lived on a beautiful big property in 90210. She really was a “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” and always rocked a cute sweater. She even had the ‘Tude to go along with it and was pretty snobby and definitely not a people person.  Everyone who met her knows she really only liked the boys. True diva indeed!

Here’s some SOS clips I put together on an Instagram Story as a tribute to our Zoe:

RIP sweet girl and thank you for your years of devotion! Now you can rest and hopefully got your hearing back in puppy heaven where all is perfect.

With Love,

P.S. Happy April Y’all. It’s going to be an amazing month! We head over to Australia tomorrow to visit our Aussie family! So excited. Remember to take some time to look over your vision board, set your intentions for the month and really think about what you WANT!
