THE QUEEN OF BEAUTY: Manuka Honey

 

G’day Gorgeous!

We’re back from an amazing trip to my hubby’s homeland of Australia. Such a wonderful time with his family! Family truly is everything. We helped his parents move from the mainland over to the stunning state of Tasmania to be closer to the grandkids. A beautiful new chapter for everyone and we will make it our 2nd home!

 

Aside from the family time, one of the things I love most about traveling is learning about the local foods, plants, animal life (we got to feed kangaroos and learned all about the nasty Tasmanian Devil.. yes, it’s a real thing not just a cartoon character), fashion and beauty rituals. For months, I’ve been hearing about the beauty benefits of Manuka Honey which is native to Tasmania and the neighboring country of New Zealand. Of course, I had to pick some up and give it a try.

To recoup from 36 hours of travel and intense jet lag, I’ve been detoxing my body with lots of ACV & lemon water, epsom salt & baking soda bath, cat naps, light walks and a DIY mask with the Manuka Honey. Love that it lived up to the hype!  Here is the recipe I used:

  • 2 Tablespoons of Manuka Honey
  • 2 big dashes (about 1/2 a Teaspoon) of Cinnamon
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of Rosewater (make sure not to use too much of the mixture will get too runny)

Simply mix together in a ceramic or glass bowl and apply all over a dry clean face. You can use a brush or just use your fingertips like I did! Let it set for about 20 minutes then use a warm wet washcloth to remove. Use a cotton pad saturated with rosewater to get any residual stickiness off. Apply your usual moisturizer.

WHY THE MANUKA & CINNAMON COMBO?

Cinnamon is an antiseptic so it will reduce the bacteria that causes acne. It also reduces inflammation and redness, stimulates circulation, exfoliates and revitalizes the skin by drawing blood and oxygen to the surface of your skin, leaving it clear and glowing. WooHoo! 

Manuka honey, produced in New Zealand and Tasmania, AU by bees that pollinate the Manuka bush (which is a Tea Tree variety), is one of the most unique and beneficial forms of honey in the world. There are many Manuka honey uses that range from healing sore throats and digestive illnesses, to curing Staph infections and gingivitis.

FUN FACTS:

What makes Manuka honey different is its amazing nutritional profile. Regular raw honey is already known for its tremendous nutritional and immune boosting abilities. Generally speaking, the typical raw unfiltered honey is a rich source of:

  • Amino acids
  • B vitamins (B6, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid)
  • Calcium
  • Copper
  • Iron
  • Magnesium
  • Manganese
  • Phosphorus
  • Potassium
  • Sodium
  • Zinc

Yet with Manuka honey, the nutritional content is up to 4 times that of normal flower honeys. This is what is called the Unique Manuka Factor.

Unique Manuka Factor

In 1981, researchers at the New Zealand University of Waikato discovered that Manuka honey has a considerably higher level of enzymes than regular honey. These enzymes create a natural hydrogen peroxide that works as an antibacterial. Some strains of this New Zealand honey are particularly rich in hydrogen peroxide, methylglyoxal and dihydroxyacetone.

This medicinal trilogy helps make up what is referred to as the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF), a global standard in identifying and measuring the antibacterial strength of Manuka. (3) Essentially, the UMF is a guarantee that the honey being sold is of a medicinal quality.

UMF is not found in the nectar of all Manuka flowers and, comparatively speaking, regular Manuka only contains the hydrogen peroxide antibacterial property that is common to most types of honey.

What separates UMF Manuka from other Manuka varieties is that it has both the natural hydrogen peroxide and its own natural UMF antibacterial property, which greatly enhances it effectiveness. The UMF properties of Manuka is extremely stable and, unlike the hydrogen peroxide common in most honey, is not easily destroyed by heat, light and enzymes in the body.

How to Verify Genuine UMF Manuka Honey

The minimum UMF rating recognized is UMF5, however, it is not considered beneficial unless it carries a UMF 10+ level of antibacterial activity in the honey. Anything ranging from UMF10-UMF15 is a useful level, and anything UMF16 and up is considered a superior quality.

Genuine UMF Manuka Honey will have these four things:

  • It will have a UMF trademark clearly labeled on the front of the container.
  • It will be from a New Zealand UMF licensed company and labelled in New Zealand.
  • It will have the UMF company’s name and license number on the label.
  • It will have a UMF rating number of 5-16+. If it is labeled without the UMF or without a number, then it is not the genuine article.

 

This means that a UMF rating of 20+ is equivalent in strength to a 20% solution of phenol. The ideal UMF rating varies depending on your purpose, but laboratory studies have shown that manuka honey with a non-peroxide activity level of UMF®12 to UMF®15 is effective against a wide range of very resistant bacteria.

Here is an explanation of what manuka honey UMF you should use:

0-4 Non-therapeutic

4-9 Maintenance level with general honey health benefits

10-14 Supports natural healing and bacterial balance

15+ Superior levels of phenols that are highly therapeutic but shouldn’t exceed taking 1 tbsp at a time

Bright Eyed & Bushy Tailed for the HoliDAZE

Because I work in front of the camera and have to look bright-eyed at a moments notice, I have found the following tips give me an instant well-rested look even after a night of little sleep, high sodium meals, sugary treats and one glass of wine too many!  On top of that, I have hereditary dark circles and puffy eyes.  The use of heaters and all the nasal issues we deal with during the winter can add to the puffy eye problem as well.  The combination of the following tips will give you the appearance of being bright eyed and bushy tailed and as if you slept a full 8 hours, I promise!

1. HYDRATE: Drink a large glass of water with juice from half a lemon. This aids in relieving a puffy face and cleanses the body of toxins. Also, helps keep your belly flatter for that sassy cocktail dress. (I actually down a big glass of lemon water first thing EVERY a.m.)

2. NATURAL DIURETIC: Puffiness is due to a build up of fluid under the eye.  Eat a bowl a strawberries to flush out water retention.  They are loaded with calcium, potassium and arginine which have diuretic properties.

3. TEA BAGS: Chill used tea bags in the fridge and apply to eyes for 10 minutes to reduce swelling. Cold spoons work as well, but aren’t as comfortable.

4. UNDER EYE CREAM WITH CAFFEINE:  Look for eye creams and serums with caffeine which shrinks fluid buildup under the eye. I use Garnier anti-dark circle rollerball with tint on days my eyes are extra dark and puffy. The caffeine plus the rollerball help de-puff the under eye area super quick.

5. EGG WHITE MASK: Using approximately 1 teaspoon of an egg white as a facial mask will tighten the skin and shrink swelling and pore size. Wakes up your skin and gives you an instant glow. Make sure to do this mask the day of an important event where lots of photos will be taken! Your skin will be glowing and smooth.

6. HIGHLIGHTER IN CORNER OF EYES: Adding a brightening white, beige or peach eyeshadow to the inner corner of the eye adds a youthful look and widens the appearance of the eyes giving a more rested look.

7. VISINE: A ‘must do’ to whitens the eyes.

9. ADD CUCUMBERS TO EVERY MEAL. (Great to do year round, not just the holidays!) Cucumbers contain silica, an ingredient which boosts moisture and elasticity to the skin. It’s awesome for hydrating dry skin and hair during winter. I’ve been eating a Persian cucumber before bed the past few months and can see a big difference in my skin when I wake up. Thanks to my sister, esthetician and wellness ambassador Natalie Bolton for the tip!

10. RAISE YOUR HEART RATE: Doing 50 jumping jacks or taking a brisk 15-20 minute walk instantly increases the circulation in the body which adds a flush to the cheeks helping you look and feel more awake.

Plus, if you can get in a few 15 minute power naps here and there during the holidays it will help you get through all the activities! Make sure to drink a protein shake or protein-rich snack like tuna fish before heading to a cocktail party. Protein digests slower giving you a “full” feeling longer and will keep you from lapping around the snack table one too many times.

Regardless of your hair length, it can get so sticky and uncomfortable, plus the humidity can have you looking like a wet mop during summer.  There are so many ways to keep it off your neck without reverting to the boring old ponytail.  This summer, the Retro 50’s look is everywhere from swimsuits, rolled up jeans, cat eye shades and headscarfs–which you all know is MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE!   Channel your inner Old Hollywood actress like Sophia Loren or Audrey Hepburn and play around with scarves.  Check out my Pinterest Board on headscarves for more ideas and inspiration.

Keep a bottle of aromatherapy hydrating spray nearby at all times during the hot months.  I even keep a small travel size bottle in my purse!  When you’re skin is feeling parched, spritz it on your face, neck, decolletage and down your arms.  My favorite is the Rose Water by Heritage Products.  There are also easy DIY recipes by adding your favorite essential oils, pure aloe vera juice, cucumber or lemon to distilled water.

GOT SPOTS? Natural rememdies for sunspots! Yay, Fage!

One of the most asked beauty questions I receive is “HOW DO I GET RID OF SUNSPOTS”?  I battle this problem as well and have found several expensive products that are effective.  Many use hydroquinone which actually makes my sunspots worse! GRRRRR!  The Skincerity Nightly Masque definitely helped too, but I wanted to find some natural home remedies which are healthy and inexpensive.  Let the research begin….

I was thrilled to find out that the Fage Greek Yogurt I have been raving about does wonders on sunspots. (HAPPY DANCE)  I went straight to the fridge and plopped some on my upper lip and a few spots on my cheeks which are the normal areas most women with olive skin get hyperpigmentation.  If I let it go untreated for too long, I look like I have a faint mustache.  Not a cute look!  After continuing this everyday for over a week, the spots are fading.  Woohoo!  The lactic acid in yogurt acts as a natural lightener + brightener.

Another old ancient natural remedy is lemon juice.  Simply cut a lemon in half and massage the pulp of the lemon directly on the skin for about a minute, allow to dry and set on the skin for 15 minutes, then rinse. *WARNING*  Lemon juice is too acidic to be applied directly to sensitive skin.  Simply squeeze a few lemon wedges into an ounce of fresh, clean water (never tap), then apply and allow to set for 15 minutes, rinse.  Be sure to apply sunscreen afterward because the lemon juice will make your skin photosensitive and you could end up with more spots.  Do not use lemon juice daily.  You will should see results from using it about twice a week for a few months. 

Pineapple juice and tomato juice are also effective.  They both have enzymes which lighten spots and exfoliate the skin.  Simply apply the juice directly to the skin and dilute it if you have sensitive skin.  Allow to dry for 15 minutes, rinse.

*REMINDER* With any skin lightening program, it is vital to wear SPF on a daily basis.

If you try any of these tips, I would love to hear feedback in a month or so.
