Wings Or The Worm

bfly_wing copy

 Hey, Hey, Hey!

Are you conscious of your behavior after a phone call or coffee date with a certain friend who brings out your weaknesses instead of your strengths? For example, you chat with a dear friend who is always complaining and venting her drama- complete with a few curse words for punctuation- and the rest of the day you are whining, focusing on your burdens instead of your blessings and cursing like a sailor. Trust me, I am no Miss Priss and have a fiery personality so a few curse words may fly out of my mouth when I get heated. Not proud of it- just keepin’ it real. As I always say- I’m a work in progress! My point is how interesting we are as humans to emulate and model those we hang around. We may be Spiritually-conscious and awake with our shelves filled with self-help books, but it is easy to get sucked in to the chicken coop instead of rising above and soaring like the eagle that we are.

I love listening to T.D. Jakes during my power walks and a few days ago he said one simple phrase that struck a chord in me. He said, “Are you associating with people who bring out the wings in you or the worm in you?” Obviously, he’s referring to the beautiful idea of transformation through the butterfly. I posted this on Facebook, but wanted to elaborate and start the discussion here on the blog. We are always in a state of growth and transformation- at least I hope we are! I realize you have joined this community because you place your personal growth, development and empowerment as a priority. As an ‘instigator of change and an ‘agent of transformation’, I thrive on constant growth. The minute I feel stagnant in any area of my life- I’ve got to switch things up, change the behavior and expand a bit.

We can always be a little bit better today than we were yesterday and I will keep that philosophy until I’m 85.

A vital aspect of our growth is who we surround ourselves with.  Are you associating with those who challenge you to come up higher & encourage you to fly?  A few of my girlfriends are gifted encouragers. They have the ability to hone in on someone’s strengths and lift that person up by pointing out and vocalizing these positive traits. They bring out the wings in that person! Don’t you love being around people like that?!  Often times, we are able to reveal a strength in someone that they didn’t even realize they had. By doing so, we open that person up to their full potential which puts them in a position to fly.

On the other hand, we must be mindful of those who try to bring out the worm in us. You know that friend that likes to include you when she’s talking about her own short comings. She says things like, “We have a hard time losing weight because WE are just lazy”. Then you start questioning yourself, “Am I fat? She’s right- I am lazy”. {Record Scratch} Counteract it by kindly not accepting those negative words over your life and respond with something like, “I’m happy with my weight and work out 4-5 times a week. ‘Lazy’ is not a title I care to wear, thank you”. Of course, then there’s the family member who tries to make you feel bad that you are a ‘driven dreamer’ who appreciates nice things. Misery loves company. It takes all kinds to make the world go round and we can love them and learn from them, but we can also limit our exposure to them. When you’re around the critical ones, stand firm in your beliefs and positivity.

Make sure you are rubbing off on them and not the other way around.

ACTION STEP: Take a look around you. Who do you spend the most time with? Wing peeps or worm peeps? Make a conscious effort to spend more time with friends who are positive and living a life of excellence & purpose! Those who speak about life with enthusiasm. We all have a Destiny to fulfill so it’s crucial to associate with those who help you come up higher and stay on your path- and vice versa.

We become like those we hang around. Surround yourself with those who like to soar. Be the wind beneath each other’s wings!

As always, I love to hear your thoughts.

LAYER IT UP! Summer to Fall Wardrobe Tips

Hi Pretty Peacock!

Is it still summer-like temps where you live?  It has been ridiculously HOT HOT HOT here in LA so I’m sure you sisters down in my home state of Texas are still rockin’ the flip flops and sundresses too.  Hopefully, in the next few weeks we will all get a break from this heat and be able to wear a pair of slouchy boots at least.  My leather jacket has been sweetly calling my name for the past few weeks, “Yoo Hoo Tiffany….Hey, Tiff….I miss you. I’m lonely. Come out and play!”  I admit- I do have separation anxiety from it, but it will have to keep hanging there all alone for now.  Luckily, there are a few simple tips for transitioning our wardrobes as the temps do slowly begin to drop.  LAYERING is the first option to think about and I  show you a few simple tweaks in this week’s webisode:

{Slouchy Boot + Heavier Belts}

{Darker Nail Color + A Great Scarf}

Ready to switch gears……

Every once in a while, a book affects you so profoundly that it must be shared! I love it when that happens, don’t you? (Thanks LG!)   “The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari” is an inspiring, fun and thought-provoking MUST READ!  There are a ton of A-ha’s and words of wisdom that will feed your mind + spirit and get you on the path to living a more RADIANT LIFE.  I know you will love it as much as I do.  Here are a few great excerpts:

  • “But it is a perfect world, and you have a perfect life. You do have the power to control your day. You do have the power to think good thoughts. You do have the power to live your dreams!”
  • “Do not just read anything. You must be very selective about what you put into the lush garden of your mind. It must be immensely nourishing. Make it something that will improve both you and the quality of your life.”
  • “When you erase fear from your mind, you start to look younger and your health becomes more vibrant.”

Do you have a topic you would like to see a video on? Comment and share….You have my ear sista!

How are you doing so far with this week’s affirmations?

NO! Two Little Letters…..So Much Power (Plus Part 2)

Hi Powerful Peacocks!

You ready to get your fill of Beauty, Style + Inspiration?  This blog post is busting at the seams with it!  You may want to grab a pen and paper.  Kick back and let the fun begin…

Not being able to SAY NO is a topic that comes up often among us gals. If you don’t have an issue with it- kudos girlfriend!  It is definitely something that took me a while to get a handle on and still find it to be a challenge.  Grrrr- this tiny little word with those two little letters can have such a kung fu grip on us.  We all have so many commitments these days between our families and their commitments, friends, career demands, church, community plus all the extra-curricular activities like small group meetings, team sports, etc.  WHEW!  I’m worn out just writing all that. Women tend to be “people pleasers” and do not want to let anyone down by not agreeing to help with a task, do a favor or attend an event.  It is just a fact that you cannot be productive if you over-commit yourself! By spreading yourself too thin, you will end up jeopardizing your important priorities and ultimately your health and stress level.   Take the pressure off yourself and start saying “NO” politely and with love.  Here’s 5 tips to help you get started:

  1. YOUR TIME IS PRECIOUS!  Start valuing it by dedicating your time to your priorities. If you don’t have your priorities straight, then start there first!
  2. PRACTICE SAYING “NO”!  Like everything in life, we must practice, practice, practice. Eventually you will be comfortable saying it. I promise.
  3. BE UNAPOLOGETIC! It is important to be polite, but it’s okay to be firm when you are protecting your time.
  4. TAKE A BEAT!  It is totally acceptable to say, “let me get back to you” or “maybe later”.  If it’s a situation that sounds interesting, but you simply do not have the time for it right now- maybe you can rearrange your schedule or fit it in when you have some free time later.
  5. LET GO OF THE GUILT!  Stand your ground and respect your decision for saying no.   We tend to feel guilty later, but that serves no purpose. Let it go, you made your mind up and move on.

Do you find saying “NO” difficult?  Have you overcome it?  Please leave a comment!

HERE’S PART 2 OF KILL THAT SUMMERTIME SHINE:

A few of you have already picked up the Physicians Formula SPF 50 and said you love it! Woohoo!

STYLE TIP FOR THE WEEK:

One of the reasons I love summer so much is that we’re able to rock fun exotic prints that have an international flare plus tropical florals, great woven bags and bright jewelry like that great turquoise piece you picked up in Mexico!  I’ll be chatting more about this in an upcoming webisode on MY SUMMER ESSENTIALS.  A great Tribal or Navajo print is definitely a MUST ROCK!  I’m drooling over this BCBG dress that just came out:

A BIT OF DESSERT WITH A CHERRY ON TOP:

I was asked for my recommendations on books I found helpful along my path of Spiritual growth and healing.  There are so many more that this list, but here is a list of books I highly recommend:

  1. The Bible. The best “self help” book ever.
  2. Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill.  I like to read this once a year!  It’s not just about financial riches.
  3. The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide To Personal Freedom by Miguel Ruiz.  4 simple but profound things to apply to our lives to bring peace, grace and unconditional love.
  4. The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. Learning to live fully present. Another one I re-read yearly.
  5. Battlefield of the Mind by Joyce Meyer.  The most brilliant guide to overcoming negative thinking and depression.
  6. As A Man Thinketh by James Allen. I actually keep this on my nightstand 24/7. It’s all about your thoughts relating to your circumstances.
  7. The Power of Intention by Dr. Wayne Dyer. Encourages determination and a never-give-up attitude.
  8. Your Best Life Now by Joel Osteen. Steps to living your full potential.
  9. Sacred Contracts: Awakening Your Divine Potential  by Carolyn Myss. Discovering your life purpose.
  10. The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron.  Helps unlock creativity and the Spiritual connection to it.

A few other’s that just popped in my head that I just cannot leave out are A Course In Miracles,  A Return To Love by Marianne Williamson and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey.

Do you have a ‘must read’ book that was life-altering for you? Please share!
