THINK DIRTY. SHOP CLEAN. Must Get App

Hey Savvy Shopper!

As a beauty junkie, it’s always a challenge to choose the healthiest products because many of the hot, must have items are loaded with highly toxic ingredients. I do my best to choose what’s best for my health and now it will be even easier! Last week, my dear friend and lash stylist- Kathy Mitchell, co-owner of Bella Lash Boutique and essential oil enthusiast- told me about the Think Dirty App. It is simply brilliant! Go download it now. You scan the barcode on any cosmetic or personal care product and it will show a rating from 1-10 on carcinogenic levels (cancer causing), developmental & reproductive/hormone toxicity and allergy & immunity toxicity. Many companies “claim” to be organic and all-natural, but are not! Ladies, we must educate ourselves especially those of us who are beauty junkies and use several products a day. If I counted every product I use from toothpaste, deodorant, body lotion, shampoo, hair masks, body wash, facial creams, perfumes, hairspray and we haven’t even gotten to my makeup vanity yet. Yikes!  Kathy has lost 55 lbs by eating cleaner and changing out the toxic products she was using. Our bodies carry so much inflammation which effects everything from our metabolism to our hormones.

The founder of the app, Lily Tse comes from a family with a history of cancer. She began researching the carcinogenic and hormone disrupting ingredients in beauty products:

“I never realized the environmental impact cosmetics had on our health, until I watched Annie Leonard’s “Story of Cosmetics”, which examined the pervasive use of toxic chemicals in our everyday personal care products.

There are hormone disruptor chemicals in many products that have been possibly linked to breast cancer. I was shocked the cosmetics industry was not regulated like the food and drug sectors. And like most women, my lipgloss and shampoo are products I would never think to describe as “toxic” or could contain cancer-causing chemicals.

Finding safer alternatives for myself was a huge challenge. Although many products are labeled “all-natural” or “organic”, there is little transparency in labeling cosmetics. There was also no real tool out there for consumers to find information easily. With my background in design and marketing, I wanted to develop and create something not only for myself but for others as well, and that’s how Think Dirty® was founded.” For more, go to https://www.thinkdirtyapp.com.

Did you download the app yet?

The Hannibal Look + Coconut Oil = GORGEOUS!

fullsizerender-113

I love getting beauty tips from makeup artists and sharing them with you fellow beauty junkies!  I started modeling professionally at 16 and have worked with hundreds of makeup artists. Being the precocious teen I was, I learned early to ask makeup artists, stylists and hair stylists questions. You’re there with them face-to-face for a good hour so why not get as much info out of them as you can?!

Yesterday, I lent my face to my talented girlfriends who own The Makeup Zone in Plano for a fun YouTube video. Daniela and Leslie are beautiful, generous and driven and you know I love surrounding myself with women like that. I was thrilled that they asked me to be their model! If you are a MUA artist, make sure to participate in their challenge. It’s recreating Jessica Chastain’s look from the upcoming film called Miss Sloane. For more info, go to their Facebook Page.

Because I needed to arrive to set with a clean face, I wanted to make sure my skin was prepped and hydrated. I told Leslie I had just done my go-to egg white mask so my face would be a good canvas for them. She began telling me her at home secrets for getting hydrated and glowing skin. Of course, I had to try it and share with you. She said if you have a big event to wear a sheet mask every night for 4-5 nights before the event. If you need a quick fix, rub coconut oil into your skin then wear the sheet mask over it for as long as you can. I did this last night and whoa– my skin was tight, glowing and plump this morning.

I love those sheet masks and recommend finding one that addresses your specific skin needs. The one I’ve been using lately is for brightening (shown above) and purchased them at Marshalls. A pack of 4 was only $5.99. You can find them on Amazon, at Ulta and I believe even Target carries them now. I always feel like I look like Hannibal Lector when I wear them, but who cares as long as it works, right? Aaron came home late from a gig and I had fallen asleep with it on- poor guy, I think I scared him. LOL!

WHY COCONUT OIL?

cocnut-oil

Coconut oil is truly a gift from nature with so many benefits. The antibacterial properties of coconut oil  protect the skin from potential pathogens and reduces the risk of bacterial infections making acne worse. It is mainly the lauric acid in the coconut oil that acts as the antibacterial agent. This medium chain fatty acid constitutes 85% of the coconut oil. The only other natural substance high in lauric acid happens to be breast milk.

Coconut oil has the ability to penetrate deep into the skin so it hydrates quickly. It also helps with wrinkles and anti-aging because the triglycerides attract protein molecules which constantly repair the collagen layer.

Sounds like we all need to keep a jar of coconut oil on our vanity and not just in the kitchen.

Go get your glow on gorgeous!

Laser It This Winter

ipl

Hello December!

Hope you all survived Thanksgiving and enjoyed some downtime with friends and family. I sure did! I’m excited for December and making the final 31 days of 2015 amazing.

With the craziness of the holidays, I encourage you to do something for you. Remember- this is never in the tone of selfishness. Women get so caught up in doing for others at this time of year that they neglect themselves.

One thing I love to do during Winter is treat myself to an IPL- Intense Pulsed Light Facial. It’s the perfect time to do it because we’re indoors and out of the sunshine. An IPL gets rid of the hyper pigmentation and sunspots that creeped in during the Summer months. There’s minimal downtime and virtually pain free. The décolletage is also a great area to treat with an IPL.

Get ready for 2016 with a beautiful complexion! As usual, I love sharing my research with you. Here’s some basic info on lasers:

Using Lasers to Treat Skin Conditions

Laser procedures can be used to treat a wide variety of skin conditions. Some of them are more precise, targeting specific blemishes, sun spots, or birthmarks. Others are meant to give a more generalized treatment and revitalize the surface of the skin in the treated area. That’s typically called laser skin resurfacing or a laser peel.

When You Should Seek Out Laser Treatments

If you’re on the fence about whether or not to have a laser treatment, you need to really take a close look at your skin issues. Remember that laser treatments are relatively easy, and the risks are low. It’s not like having surgery. However, if you have minor skin problems that could possibly be controlled by creams or lotions, you might be better off to go that route.

Also, keep in mind that lasers treat a variety of skin problems, including scarring, wrinkles, and sun damage. So, you shouldn’t rule them out just because you have a specific type of skin problem that you think doesn’t apply. Chances are good that there is a laser treatment out there for you, regardless of the type of damage you are trying to reverse.

How Laser Treatment Impacts Your Skin

There are actually two ways that cosmetic lasers impact your skin. One is that the laser machine could focus on a specific spot and heat it to get rid of it. Those spots could be unwanted hairs, acne scars, or other imperfections. The other is that the machine could simply be uses do heat up the skin in a certain area without targeting a specific spot. That type of treatment is designed to get the body to produce healthy proteins and other substances to revitalize the skin. One of those important substances is collagen.

Reasons to Choose Lasers Over Other Skin Procedures

There are a couple of reasons to choose lasers over other skin procedures. One reason is that there is usually minimal discomfort when you’re having laser therapy. The technician should numb the treated area before the procedure begins. Other procedures might be a bit more uncomfortable. Another reason is that both the process itself and the recovery time should be faster than many other procedures, such as facelift surgery. It’s also important to keep in mind that certain laser treatments are better for treating specific spots on the skin. Other types of skin procedures tend to target large sections of skin, instead.

Laser Recovery Time is Limited

Laser recovery time is usually quite limited. It might take as little as a few hours to get back to your daily life after laser treatment. It certainly shouldn’t take more than a day or two. However, there may be aftercare instructions to follow, such as applying medicated cream to the treated area or not picking at any temporary scabs that may form. Instructions will vary a bit, depending on the exact treatment you have.

Lasers May Not Always be the Perfect Choice

Although lasers can be used to treat many different types of skin problems, they aren’t always the perfect choice for everyone. Other factors, such as how oily your skin is or what color it is, may mean that you should try a different procedure instead. So, always discuss your options with an expert before having any procedure performed.

Also, it’s important that the medspa where you book your IPL procedure knows your skin history and skin type. For example, I am part Asian and my skin hyper pigments easily. The setting on the laser machine needs to be set accordingly.

Be BeaYOUtiful,

Tiff

THE 5- MINUTE FACE LIFT: Tiff’s Latest Beauty SOS

FullSizeRender-40

Hello Gorgeous!

You know I love sharing the latest and greatest finds that help us look and feel our best. I’m excited to tell you about the new addition to my vanity! Have you seen this little gadget yet by NuFace I first heard about it on the Today Show with Kathy Lee & Hoda sometime in the summer. My interest was immediately peaked because I was approaching my 44th birthday in August and was starting to see the first signs of dreaded sagging- especially in the jowl area. GRRRR!

A birthday gift to myself this year was a new skincare regimen and a new health/wellness supplement and vitamin program. I’ve always taken fairly good care of myself, but I admit I was slacking on my skincare and buying cheap vitamins from wherever. Life gets busy and we put ourselves on the back burner. I needed to practice what I preach and desperately needed a beauty and health SOS! My birthday was the perfect time to give it to myself. I’ll tell you about my new supplements in a different post later. All I can say is I have more energy than I did when I was in my late 20’s. HOLLA!

FullSizeRender-41

Back to the gadget. The NuFACE Microcurrent Toning Device is known as the 5 minute Face-Lift and it really works! I’ve been using it for nearly 2 months and can see a difference in my jowl, the folds by my nose and eyelids are lifted. Can I just say how strange it is to start seeing your eyelids sag and your mascara gets all over your eyelids from your lashes rubbing?!? What the heck!  It’s easy to use and really only takes 5 minutes so it’s perfect for even the busiest gal. It’s also painless and you may only feel slight little tingles from the microcurrent. There is a setting to increase or decrease the microcurrents to your comfort level. The NuFACE device is clinically-tested to stimulate the skin to improve facial contour, skin tone, and wrinkle reduction across the jawline, cheek area and forehead.

Here’s a quick video of how it works:

I went to LA for my birthday and took it with me so my sister could try it. She’s a licensed esthetician and I knew she would give me an honest review after she tried it. Even she was amazed and saw instant results on her eyebrow and eyelid! After further research, we found that the microcurrents are like a “workout” for your face. Just like working out- our muscles atrophy when we stop. So, the recommended use for the NuFACE device is at least 5 times a week for the first 3 months then a few times a week for maintenance. Easy breezy. Safe and simple.

Amazon has this new Trinity model with FREE SERUM. Check it out here.

HYDRATE DULL WINTER SKIN

Hello Gorgeous!
I’ve received so many comments and messages about how great my skin looked after posting last Monday’s motivational video in my kitchen without makeup on. (Thanks so much!)  If you’ve been following the blog or YouTube channel for a while you know all the different products I swear by. If not, browse through my Beauty Video Playlist and check out all the different products I love. But, here are 3 simple things I always add during winter to keep my skin hydrated– especially now that we live in a climate that actually has winter temperatures.

Mint-tea

1) DRINK MORE WATER AND HERBAL TEAS.

Water increases cell hydration, but the antioxidants in the herbal teas actually help by detoxifying the entire body especially the kidney and liver so your skin (which is also an organ) can function properly. One of my favorites is Tazo’s mint tea.

omega+3

2) ADD OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS TO YOUR DIET.

Add Omega 3 by eating more fish like salmon or simply taking a good Omega 3 supplement. They are vital for healthy skin and helps regulate oil production in your skin. Having plenty of this essential fatty acid in your system keeps your skin hydrated and prevents it from drying and flaking. You can find great supplements everywhere from Target to Whole Foods.

humidifier

3) KEEP YOUR HOME HUMID.

The heaters will dry everything out from you throat, nostrils, eyes and skin. Adding humidity to combat the dryness will do wonders for you. Use a humidifier or even a large bowl of water sitting close by will add moisture to the air and keep your skin from getting dry and dull.

I am so ready for Spring!

Stay hydrated.

Love, Tiff

NEW YEAR’S DETOX: Inside & Out

sweet-potato-soup

Happy 2015 Gorgeous,

I hope you all had a wonderful time ringing in the new year with family and friends. Have you been indulging? I sure have and don’t feel guilty about it at all, no mam! But,  I am excited to get focused and back on the regular routine. A light cleanse and detox always does the trick for me. I’ve already shared how to get your mind & spirit ready for the new year so the perfect topic for the very 1st blog post of 2015 is preparing your body for looking and feeling it’s strongest.

First, get back in the habit of drinking your lemon water every morning upon rising!

Second, eat a nutrient rich, fat flushing veggie soup for about 7 days. I love this recipe (and so does my hubby) and have been eating it for the past few days. It’s so tasty you don’t think of it as a detox soup! With the rain and chill here in DFW, this detox soup has been ideal.

  • 3 peeled & sliced carrots
  • 1 stalk of celery, sliced
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, cut into cubes
  • 1 clove minced garlic
  • 1 small white or yellow onion, diced
  • sea salt to taste
  • pepper to taste
  • all spice to taste
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 cans drained black beans (optional for added protein)
  • 2- 32 oz cartons veggie broth
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 4 cups baby spinach

Add everything -except the spinach- in a large pot or crock pot. Cook covered on low for about 4 hours. Just before serving, add in spinach and stir for about 3-5 minutes until wilted.

I keep the rest of my diet clean with egg whites or a protein shake for breakfast, the soup for lunch and a big salad for dinner. Snack on fruit and nuts throughout the day. Drink tons of water!

This recipe is from the book, Hungry for Change. This soup is packed with superfoods, antioxidants and fiber which flush toxins and fat from the body. It’s a healthy, safe and effective way to kickstart healthy eating changes for the new year!

FullSizeRender-1

Third, the indulging also effects our skin so I love a soothing detox bath. This stimulates the lymphatic system, cleans pores and softens skin. Make sure to drink plenty of water prior to and after the bath!

*If you have an oversized spa tub, double the ingredients.

  • 1/3 Cup of Sea Salt
  • 1/3 Cup of Epsom Salt
  • 1 Cup Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons of ground ginger

Have a tall glass of water ready to drink in the bathroom. Set the bath water temp a bit hotter than normal, but make sure it’s still comfortable. Stay in this mixture for at least 15 minute making sure to submerge your entire body up to your neck. I take little breaks and sit up every few minutes. DO NOT LET YOURSELF OVERHEAT! The ginger really gets your circulation and sweat glands going.

If you are in a tub with a shower head, as you drain the water, stand up slowly and rinse off with lukewarm water. This washes away any residual salts and toxins sitting on the skin.

Dry off well and hydrate with a moisture rich lotion.

Drink that tall glass of water! Try to plan this in the evening when you do not have to be anywhere. Relax and enjoy!

DETOXMineral-Masque-Group_1024x1024

Fourth, now that your pores are open, sit back and relax with a detoxing mineral masque. Because of the additional sugar, sleeping with my makeup on too many nights (I know, I know… bad girl!) I’ve had some light breakouts so I get things back in order with Hard Night Good Morning’s Detox Mineral Masque.   It oxygenates your skin so you can feel and look rejuvenated. Perfect for all the late night’s and too many glasses of wine! Just sayin’!

This is your year to live a bit bigger & bolder than you ever have.

I’m ready. Are you?

LET’S GO!

“HOUSTON: We have a solution!” by Wellness Warrior & Aesthetician Natalie Bolton

“HOUSTON: We have a solution!”

In honor of being back in this great Space City, and also for all of you other superb individuals abroad I have created a solution plan for combating the winter skin blues.

The official first day of fall has come and here we are.

FALL.

For some the change in season(s) is welcomed with parties, fluffy robes, champagne in hand and the dusting off of the most exquisite boots to ever be over worn. Let’s not forget the not so amazing boots that we all love to hate; a.k.a. the “moon boot”-we just can’t help but to have a nasty love affair with them.

And for others (myself being the ringleader of this category) any season NOT SUMMER offers up a bit of an emotional backlash. I immediately turn into the “weird, she- takes- a- sweater-everywhere- lady”, and I cry as anxiety washes over me when the sun goes down at 4:45. As we reminisce of summer days gone by we now must call out over the loudspeaker for a “cleanup on aisle 5!” in regards to our approximate 93 days of perpetual sun worship. So not only are we dealing with

  • STRIPPED
  • DRY
  • SUN-DAMAGED
  • DEHYDRATED SKIN

We must now off set the chill, chapped, and crepey flake machine we call our skin.

And here are my go to strategies, products and mindsets (mindsets probably leading the pack in importance).

-Peels for sun damage

Now is the time to erase boo boos made with those long hours in summer celebration. The great fact about peels is the technology is constantly changing and you can choose how aggressive or slow and steady you want to go. I use skincare lines that are pretty aggressive with zero downtime. So companies have come along with their formulations and ingredients.

-MORE WATER THAN YOU THINK. DRINK MORE WATER THAN YOU THINK. Going from dry heated rooms to bitter outdoor cold does its best to strip our natural moisture and water reserves. This dangerous combo impairs our skin’s barrier layer. Once cracked or impaired it becomes more difficult to repair damage as winter goes on. So drink up.

-Eat oil rich foods*. Great whole food oils work wonders internally and can’t help but to show externally resulting in supple skin.

  • Avocado-Hoooooooooly moly, guacamole! YES, GUAC IS GOOD!
  • Salmon*-Not only does it bear a beautiful hue; salmon is packed with life and skin enriching oils.
  • Coconut oil*-‘nuff said
  • Some good ol’ nut butters are always a great add…in moderation, and Nutella doesn’t count, sorry.

-The Bible had it right when the words in Exodus were spoken, “Go up to the land flowing with milk and honey…” Honey* heals everything!!! Mix a little honey with coffee grounds’ or sugar to make a glorious bath and body scrub. The honey will heal and soothe damaged skin and being a humectant, honey will seal in your skin’s own water helping against winter chapping. Milk* is a naturally acidic agent formally called lactic acid. Milk has a magical way of removing the skin layer that wants to flake off and peel. If you find that you are consistently dry-I suggest buying powdered milk like the one below and pouring a cup or two in a warm (not scolding hot) bath. After swirling and mixing the powder into the tub drop a few drops of chamomile, lavender, and/or natural rose oil. Chamomile and Lavender soothe and are great oils to use at bedtime, and rose oil is a humectant (locks in water for moisture) and rose oil is also a mood enhancer.

So now that we covered the strategies portions lets swiftly move on to products, you ready? Let’s go!

PRODUCTS! PRODUCTS! PRODUCTS!

I am not going to bombard you with a ton of products. I am just gonna give you a few of my staples that keep me thriving and jiving all winter long.

 image_bioelements

-BIOELEMENTS lip buff

Chapped lips? Oh, no ma’am not a good look. This buffing treatment has sugar cane crystals (exfoliating), vitamin E (water-binding), Shea butter (oil sheathing), jojoba and olive oil (moisturizing) with several essential oils to comfort and cool. Scrub a dub while you’re in the tub.

-IMAGE balancing lip enhancement complex

And if you have fine lip lines this complex helps soften those lines. This balm has a messenger peptide that tells your own collagen to start working better. The lubrication helps protect the extremely fragile barrier layer of the lips with all organic and petrochemical free ingredients. Puh puh pucker up!

-EPICUREN soothing dermal repair balm

This nectar from the gods has single handedly saved my skin the past few winters. This repair balm is so rich yet is formulated to penetrate so you don’t have to deal with that greasy layer that just sits on your skin’s surface not doing the job. In extreme cases you can wear it in the day as your moisturizer or it can be used only at night as your night cream. Easy peezy.

-BIOELEMENTS multi task eye oil

WHAAAAT? An eye oil? YES! This little bullet of power is chocked full of antioxidants and precious GLA oils. Let me just whet your pallet with a few ingredients: Bulgarian rose oil (moisturizing), Evening primrose (smoothing), and GLA-Gamma Linolenic Acid (essential fatty acids for nourishing). You can carry this with you and if you have to brave less than desirable elements just roll and dab, just roll and dab and you will have a protective curtain for the windows to your soul.

-IMAGE tinted moisturizer

This everyday moisturizer happens to be tinted and also happens to be built with broad spectrum UVA/UVB high sun protection at an SPF 30. This moisturizer provides an even skin tone (clap) and healthy glow (clap clap) so you are covering more ground with less steps and effort applied. Next generation blend of anti-oxidants and the lightweight, sheer formula makes this product one of my absolute MUST HAVES. Oh, and did I mention paraben free? Duh.

And last but definitely not least-

-GLYCOLIC 5% or 10% lotion

Glycolic Acid is magic! It is an alpha hydroxy acid that exfoliates the skin by dissolving dead skin cells. It reduces dead, layering, and smothering skin build up that is responsible for a lot of different kinds of common skin problems. Hyaluronic Acid is activated resulting in the skin’s own ability to bind moisture and lock it in. Glycolic Acid enhances the skin overall appearance by feeling and looking smoother, healthier, and more youthful.

A few pros:

  • Eats away at sun damage and discolorations
  • Pores look smaller and more refined
  • Helps even out and brighten skin tone
  • Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

So this is it.

This is all I have.

With a few of these tips Fall can be our best season yet.

Small tweaks –  powerful impact.

Thrive on,

 Natalie.

* I try to use products and ingredients that are as pure as possible and eat foods that are ethically handled. I believe in being kind to our planet and to the other glorious inhabitants we share her with. This is why I choose the specific products in this blog.
