THE QUEEN OF BEAUTY: Manuka Honey

G’day Gorgeous!

We’re back from an amazing trip to my hubby’s homeland of Australia. Such a wonderful time with his family! Family truly is everything. We helped his parents move from the mainland over to the stunning state of Tasmania to be closer to the grandkids. A beautiful new chapter for everyone and we will make it our 2nd home!

Aside from the family time, one of the things I love most about traveling is learning about the local foods, plants, animal life (we got to feed kangaroos and learned all about the nasty Tasmanian Devil.. yes, it’s a real thing not just a cartoon character), fashion and beauty rituals. For months, I’ve been hearing about the beauty benefits of Manuka Honey which is native to Tasmania and the neighboring country of New Zealand. Of course, I had to pick some up and give it a try.

To recoup from 36 hours of travel and intense jet lag, I’ve been detoxing my body with lots of ACV & lemon water, epsom salt & baking soda bath, cat naps, light walks and a DIY mask with the Manuka Honey. Love that it lived up to the hype!  Here is the recipe I used:

  • 2 Tablespoons of Manuka Honey
  • 2 big dashes (about 1/2 a Teaspoon) of Cinnamon
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of Rosewater (make sure not to use too much of the mixture will get too runny)

Simply mix together in a ceramic or glass bowl and apply all over a dry clean face. You can use a brush or just use your fingertips like I did! Let it set for about 20 minutes then use a warm wet washcloth to remove. Use a cotton pad saturated with rosewater to get any residual stickiness off. Apply your usual moisturizer.

WHY THE MANUKA & CINNAMON COMBO?

Cinnamon is an antiseptic so it will reduce the bacteria that causes acne. It also reduces inflammation and redness, stimulates circulation, exfoliates and revitalizes the skin by drawing blood and oxygen to the surface of your skin, leaving it clear and glowing. WooHoo!

Manuka honey, produced in New Zealand and Tasmania, AU by bees that pollinate the Manuka bush (which is a Tea Tree variety), is one of the most unique and beneficial forms of honey in the world. There are many Manuka honey uses that range from healing sore throats and digestive illnesses, to curing Staph infections and gingivitis.

FUN FACTS:

What makes Manuka honey different is its amazing nutritional profile. Regular raw honey is already known for its tremendous nutritional and immune boosting abilities. Generally speaking, the typical raw unfiltered honey is a rich source of:

  • Amino acids
  • B vitamins (B6, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid)
  • Calcium
  • Copper
  • Iron
  • Magnesium
  • Manganese
  • Phosphorus
  • Potassium
  • Sodium
  • Zinc

Yet with Manuka honey, the nutritional content is up to 4 times that of normal flower honeys. This is what is called the Unique Manuka Factor.

Unique Manuka Factor

In 1981, researchers at the New Zealand University of Waikato discovered that Manuka honey has a considerably higher level of enzymes than regular honey. These enzymes create a natural hydrogen peroxide that works as an antibacterial. Some strains of this New Zealand honey are particularly rich in hydrogen peroxide, methylglyoxal and dihydroxyacetone.

This medicinal trilogy helps make up what is referred to as the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF), a global standard in identifying and measuring the antibacterial strength of Manuka. (3) Essentially, the UMF is a guarantee that the honey being sold is of a medicinal quality.

UMF is not found in the nectar of all Manuka flowers and, comparatively speaking, regular Manuka only contains the hydrogen peroxide antibacterial property that is common to most types of honey.

What separates UMF Manuka from other Manuka varieties is that it has both the natural hydrogen peroxide and its own natural UMF antibacterial property, which greatly enhances it effectiveness. The UMF properties of Manuka is extremely stable and, unlike the hydrogen peroxide common in most honey, is not easily destroyed by heat, light and enzymes in the body.

How to Verify Genuine UMF Manuka Honey

The minimum UMF rating recognized is UMF5, however, it is not considered beneficial unless it carries a UMF 10+ level of antibacterial activity in the honey. Anything ranging from UMF10-UMF15 is a useful level, and anything UMF16 and up is considered a superior quality.

Genuine UMF Manuka Honey will have these four things:

  • It will have a UMF trademark clearly labeled on the front of the container.
  • It will be from a New Zealand UMF licensed company and labelled in New Zealand.
  • It will have the UMF company’s name and license number on the label.
  • It will have a UMF rating number of 5-16+. If it is labeled without the UMF or without a number, then it is not the genuine article.

This means that a UMF rating of 20+ is equivalent in strength to a 20% solution of phenol. The ideal UMF rating varies depending on your purpose, but laboratory studies have shown that manuka honey with a non-peroxide activity level of UMF®12 to UMF®15 is effective against a wide range of very resistant bacteria.

Here is an explanation of what manuka honey UMF you should use:

0-4 Non-therapeutic

4-9 Maintenance level with general honey health benefits

10-14 Supports natural healing and bacterial balance

15+ Superior levels of phenols that are highly therapeutic but shouldn’t exceed taking 1 tbsp at a time

BE FAB FRIDAY: A Must Share Testimonial

Happy Friday Fierce Friends,

This is a beautiful message I had to share with you all from one of our sistas in Australia! When I receive messages like this, it always reaffirms that regardless of where we live, our age or profession- women face the same battle of “losing or giving up on themselves”. Sista, if this is you today, please make yourself a priority and be inspired by this story:

I just wanted to send you a note to say THANK YOU!  We have never met but I feel as if you have given me some of the best advice I have had in years. For the last 10 years, I have been battling illness to which took over my body, my mind, my dreams and my sense of self. I did not realize how much it had taken from me until I was standing in a fitting room unable to pull on a size 20 jeans, size 20!! I was lost and didn’t know what to do.

It was a rainy day, I came home crawled onto the couch with my packet of chocolate biscuits and started watching YouTube. I came across your channel by accident and was hooked. I watched episode after episode. You were different to the other girls, not out there to show off your designer bags, makeup and labels or how to put on eye shadow a 100 different ways. You had substance! You teach women how to love ourselves, respect our bodies and be the best we can be. Thank you!

I am a wedding photographer who had a very successful business however it was failing badly and I couldn’t work out why. I was looking at my competition and could not figure out why they were getting the work over myself. I was well priced, qualified and producing the highest quality. Then, I watched your closest organization episode. It hit me like a brick when you said our wardrobes should be a creative space, a place of expression. I looked at my clothing and I cringe as I tell you this, I was wearing a cardigan that was coming away at the collar, wide legged mid wash jeans and black flats. I was no longer coloring or styling my hair and had given up on wearing makeup. It was in that moment I realized I had given up on myself and if this is how I present myself to the world why would I expect a couple to trust me creatively with the most important photos of their life. It was me telling clients not to invest in me by the way I was presenting myself without even knowing.

I went to my wardrobe and pulled everything onto the bed. Piece by piece I worked out what made me the best version of me and got rid of everything else. I made my health a priority and gave my body the right food. I am now loosing the weight and have a new confidence in myself and slowly but surely I am finding the real me again. My relationships have improved particularly with my husband and I find that people treat me with more respect and kindness because I value myself. Again thank you, keep up the great work, you are making a wonderful difference to people’s lives without even knowing.

With love,

Miss Never Looking Back

HAPPY WEEKEND + A SIMPLE REMINDER

Tiff-goldenelm-happyweekend{In Melbourne, AU under one of my fave trees- The Golden Elm 2006}

I’m really not sure where the week went, but I am happy it’s Friday.  How ’bout you?   I wanted to wish you all a relaxing weekend and remind you once again to do something for YOU.  If you have been part of this SOS Sisterhood for a while, you know that I harp on the importance of taking “ME TIME”.   Moms– I know this is a challenge for you that’s why I feel the need to constantly remind all of you.  I’m not a mom, but I’m a surrogate mama with plenty of people who depend on me and I know that when I get drained and depleted… I am no good to anyone.  I get easily flustered, frustrated, sassy, smart mouthed, weepy, whiny and flat out bitchy!  Not pretty!  Guys even need “me time”…. I was surprised recently by a special male follower who told me that this concept has transformed his life as well.  When we unplug, stop reading texts/emails/facebook comments, take a walk in nature, shut up the chatter in our heads and do something solely for ourselves and our own happiness, then we are able to be our best for everyone around us.  I plan to stay in my robe as long as I please tomorrow and read, then take a long walk alone and admire the flowers + trees.  I am reading 3 self-help/motivational books at the moment, but I’ll probably flip through a new fashion mag as well.  It may not sound very exciting or glamorous to you and that’s the beauty of “ME TIME”… who cares what other people think as long as it brings you peace, contentment and joy!

What will your “ME TIME” look like this weekend?

Even if it’s just fitting in a 30 minute bubble bath, please do it!  You deserve it and your loved ones will appreciate you for loving yourself enough to fill up your own love tank in order to show them more love.

Love, Tiff

FEELING FOGGY? FATIGUED? OVERALL FUNKY?

A few years ago on a Christmas trip to Australia, I found out I had this crazy thing called CANDIDA! Hmmm, what the heck is that, you ask?   After indulging on my Mother-in-Law‘s ridiculously delish homebaked breads and cakes, a friend of mine recommended I “juice” for a few days to get my system rebalanced.  He gave me a juice of apple, carrot, celery, a few other things I can’t remember along with a serious helping of ginger.   It was so hot and tangy I could barely drink it, but being the brave girl I am…I downed the entire glass of this concoction.

A few hours later during dinner, my hubby looked at me and said “babe, what’s going on with your lips?”  I was itchy all over and so uncomfortable.  I pulled out a mirror and my lips looked like Eddie Murphy‘s in the Nutty Professor.  You know the scene when he’s turning into his alter ego and his body parts are all huge and morphed!   I did have a brief Angelina Jolie moment!  By the time we got home from dinner, I had hives all over my body.  Our friend said, that looks like a candida reaction to the ginger.  HUH?  He explained that candida was an overgrowth of yeast which feeds and grows off the sugars in our bodies.  It can cause fatigue, a lethargic feeling and overall sluggish energy.   With a few simple lifestyle changes like eating more yogurt and reducing starches and sugars, candida can easily be kept under control.

My sister, Natalie,  also battles keeping her candida under control and just went on a great cleanse which she shares in the latest webisode.  She’s candid about how the cleanse gave her a bad case of smelly feet!  Pewww!
