BRONZE GLOW is a multi-functional makeup blend formulated to create the most flawless and glowing complexion. It compliments all skin tones, easy to use and won’t clog pores.  Bronze Glow is not a sunless tanning spray but rather an HD makeup enhancer and can be used on the Face and Body to achieve a rich warm glow.  *It is supposed to fade evenly after 3-4 days, but actually stayed longer on me!

The Hannibal Look + Coconut Oil = GORGEOUS!

fullsizerender-113

I love getting beauty tips from makeup artists and sharing them with you fellow beauty junkies!  I started modeling professionally at 16 and have worked with hundreds of makeup artists. Being the precocious teen I was, I learned early to ask makeup artists, stylists and hair stylists questions. You’re there with them face-to-face for a good hour so why not get as much info out of them as you can?!

Yesterday, I lent my face to my talented girlfriends who own The Makeup Zone in Plano for a fun YouTube video. Daniela and Leslie are beautiful, generous and driven and you know I love surrounding myself with women like that. I was thrilled that they asked me to be their model! If you are a MUA artist, make sure to participate in their challenge. It’s recreating Jessica Chastain’s look from the upcoming film called Miss Sloane. For more info, go to their Facebook Page.

Because I needed to arrive to set with a clean face, I wanted to make sure my skin was prepped and hydrated. I told Leslie I had just done my go-to egg white mask so my face would be a good canvas for them. She began telling me her at home secrets for getting hydrated and glowing skin. Of course, I had to try it and share with you. She said if you have a big event to wear a sheet mask every night for 4-5 nights before the event. If you need a quick fix, rub coconut oil into your skin then wear the sheet mask over it for as long as you can. I did this last night and whoa– my skin was tight, glowing and plump this morning.

I love those sheet masks and recommend finding one that addresses your specific skin needs. The one I’ve been using lately is for brightening (shown above) and purchased them at Marshalls. A pack of 4 was only $5.99. You can find them on Amazon, at Ulta and I believe even Target carries them now. I always feel like I look like Hannibal Lector when I wear them, but who cares as long as it works, right? Aaron came home late from a gig and I had fallen asleep with it on- poor guy, I think I scared him. LOL!

WHY COCONUT OIL?

cocnut-oil

Coconut oil is truly a gift from nature with so many benefits. The antibacterial properties of coconut oil  protect the skin from potential pathogens and reduces the risk of bacterial infections making acne worse. It is mainly the lauric acid in the coconut oil that acts as the antibacterial agent. This medium chain fatty acid constitutes 85% of the coconut oil. The only other natural substance high in lauric acid happens to be breast milk.

Coconut oil has the ability to penetrate deep into the skin so it hydrates quickly. It also helps with wrinkles and anti-aging because the triglycerides attract protein molecules which constantly repair the collagen layer.

Sounds like we all need to keep a jar of coconut oil on our vanity and not just in the kitchen.

Go get your glow on gorgeous!

HAVE A HEALTHY HOLIDAY: Wellness Tips

Healthy_holiday

Rush, rush, rush.

Very little sleep. Yawn!

One too many glasses of bubbly.

Skipped meals.

Family drama.

Sugar cookies.

Traffic.

Screaming kids.

Slow cashiers.

I’m stressed out just writing all of that! The holidays should be a relaxing celebration, but it often ends up being a few weeks from hell, right? When we are stressed, not getting enough sleep and drinking too much alcohol our immune system takes a beating. This is not a good thing when we’re in the midst of cold and flu season. Who has time for a cold when you’ve got a to-do list a mile long?

I encourage you all to pay attention to your stress levels and make a few tweaks to keep your immune system strong. Take a time out and fit in a 15 minute cat nap. Sleep alone will strengthen your immune system. Keep up your workout routine and add in a stretch yoga class. I know you’re in a rush, but this is not the time to skip your vitamins. Make sure to supplement with the following immune boosters too:

wellness_formula

We should all keep a bottle of WELLNESS FORMULA in our medicine cabinet throughout the year. It’s jam packed with the most effective herbal immune boosters from Vitamin C, Zinc, Garlic, Echinacea, Propolis, Ginger, Goldenseal and more. This formula helps nip colds in the bud when you begin taking it from the first signs of imbalances in your well-being. Find it on Amazon and at most health food stores.

Lately, Coconut oil is a much talked about superfood and I bet you have a jar of it in your pantry right now. In addition to using it as a butter or oil replacement, think of it as your anti-virul secret weapon. With the extra sugar we all eat and drink during the holidays, candida (yeast overgrowth) can become a problem and lowers our immune system. Coconut oil’s anti-virul properties fight off the overgrowth of yeast. I’ve been adding a teaspoon to my morning coffee and it’s like a double punch. The caffeine wakes you up and the “good fat” in the coconut oil keeps you from getting the coffee jitters and low blood sugar. I also add in a tablespoon of it in my protein shakes and soups. Hands down- coconut oil gives everything a yummy rich flavor. Put it in everything!

probitoic

I hope you are all taking a probiotic, but if you aren’t yet (shame, shame) please start NOW. Do you notice issues “down there” if you drink too much sugary wine?  Not only do we not have time for a cold, but who has time to deal with a yeast infection or UTI?  No thank you! Probiotics keep your immune system healthy by keeping your digestive system healthy. Ladies, take it a step further by also keeping your vaginal and urinary tract healthy with a probiotic for women.

Here are a few more tips to keeping healthy this holiday:

Relieve your liver by eating more cruciferous veggies. Broccoli, kale, lettuce and cabbage support your liver and immune function by boosting the livers ability to flush out toxins.

When you’re out shopping, switch out that afternoon coffee with green tea and ginger. Ginger helps cleanse the lymphatic system, support digestion and reduces any inflammation in the body. A highly functioning lymphatic system helps keep your immune system functioning at it’s highest as well.

The tip on napping deserves to be repeated. Sleep is vital to a strong immune system. I know, I know- you’re thinking who has time for a nap? Sleep deprivation not only lowers your immune function, but it decreases your memory, ability to focus and mood lifting hormones. I don’t know about you, but I’m a raging b@!#* when I’m running on little sleep. A 15-20 minute “power nap” does wonders for your brain, mood and immune system. Give yourself the gift of Zzzz’s sista!

I hope you all have a Healthy & Happy Holiday!

Take care of YOU so you can take care of OTHERS.

Please share this with your friends who overdo it around the holidays!

Wishing you plenty of front row parking spots & super fast cashiers!

SHOWER SOS: Winter Overall for the Bath & Shower

shower_blackwhiteHey Sistas!

Many of you on the East Coast are experiencing the first snowfall of the year. Believe it or not- it was 90 degrees here in LA yesterday, but the evenings are getting chilly and I have started to overall my bath & shower routine to prepare for the winter in Texas. It dropped to the 30’s there yesterday so I know my skin will have to adapt! Our skin, perspiration and oil production changes as the season’s change so it’s important to change your body wash, shampoo/conditioner and lotions. You know I am a Drugstore Diva and love finding great healthy products at the corner CVS, grocery store or Target.

Here’s my faves for giving your shower a winter SOS rescue:

alba-botanica-natural-very-emollient-bath-shower-gel-midnight-tuberose-midnight-tuberose

//ALBA NATURAL VERY EMOLLIENT BATH & SHOWER GEL//

This bath gel blends aloe vera, botanical extracts and fragrant herbs to gently cleanse, nourish and moisturize for healthy-looking skin. Hypo-allergenic and pH balanced.

St.Ives_seasalt

//ST.IVES Purifying Sea Salt Body Wash//

Renew your skin’s surface to reveal healthier looking skin with the 100% natural  exfoliants. Brighten dull skin while also hydrating.  Containing mineral salt and Pacific sea kelp, which are known to  supply skin with vitamins and anti-oxidants, the purifying formula invigorates tired, sluggish skin.

EO_bubble_bath_blu_chm_lav_md

//EO Blue Chamomile & Lavendar Bubble Bath//

I am a diehard bath lover and enjoy creating a spa-like environment with great smelling bubbles. Many are too harsh and filled with alcohol and skin-drying ingredients. Do you ever get out of the bath and your skin feels tight and itchy? It’s probably your bubble bath. I love this one by EO with Glycerin, Rice Proteins, Allantoin, and Panthenol which moisturize, hydrate and nurture the skin. Naturally derived plant Panthenol (Vitamin B) restores moisture.

SM_cond+shampoo

//SHEA MOISTURE Organice Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo + Restorative Conditioner//

An extra-moisturizing conditioner that de-tangles and repairs dry, damaged, or over-processed hair. With sea kelp, argan oil and raw, organic shea butter. Heal, grow and strengthen your hair!

albafoamshave-aloemint-web

//ALBA Natural Very Emollient Foam Shave in Aloe Mint//

Enriched with aloe vera, calendula, chamomile and vitamin E, this highly lubricating foam helps fight off dryness and chaffing.

traderjoes_bodybutter

//TRADER JOE’S Coconut Body Butter//

Before you get out of the shower, when your skin is still damp, apply a healthy oil based butter or straight coconut oil before your body lotion or use alone. I like to layer in the winter! This body butter contains Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, and Vitamin E.

SM_bodylotion

//SHEA MOISTURE Olive & Green Tea Body Lotion//

Olive Oil exhibits a high content of healing Vitamin E and fatty acids which help to hydrate, repair and heal skin.  Green Tea contains powerful antioxidants that protect skin from free radical damage.  Avocado is rich in Vitamins A, D and E, Lecithin and Potassium which help nourish skin.

5 TIPS FOR BEAUTIFUL HANDS

Homemade_scrub_seasalt copy

A few months ago,  I noticed my hands are looking…to put it bluntly….OLD!   Grrrrrr, what the heck happened?  I do admit I have been super lazy with wearing rubber gloves when I do dishes, but I always wear them when I clean.  I grew up watching my mom apply hand cream religiously and because she NEVER got in the sun, her hands are still beautiful in her 60’s.  Ok, so I also have to admit I have been lazy when it comes to applying hand cream.  Double Grrrrr!  The two places that show a woman’s real age are on her hands and decolletage.  The skin on the back of the hands is very thin so it is effected by everything from hot water, chemicals in cleaners and sun exposure.  We are able to combat the signs of aging on our faces with botox, fillers, lotions and potions, but what about our hands?  I am getting serious about taking care of my hands, so if you want to join me here’s…

5 TIPS FOR KEEPING OUR HANDS LOOKING BEAUTIFUL + YOUTHFUL:

  1. SPF:  Muy Importante!!! After applying SPF to your face, dab a bit on the back of your hands as well.  Please use an SPF 30 for optimal protection.  The next time you get in the car notice how your hands are exposed to the sun while they are on the steering wheel.  Days and days then years and years of driving with exposed hands will cause premature aging and hyperpigmentation.
  2. MINIMIZE DARK SPOTS/ LIVER SPOTS:  I recently mentioned how to naturally reduce hyperpigmentation/freckling on the face and the same rules apply to the hands.  If you use a Vitamin C rich face serum, start rubbing it into the back of the hands or use lemon juice to lighten existing spots.
  3. EXFOLIATE WEEKLY:  I keep it simple with a DIY scrub (shown above) of olive oil, sea salt and lemon juice.  It’s like a triple punch!  The olive oil moisturizes, the sea salt exfoliates dead skin and the lemon juice brightens the skin and nails.  You can add lavender or eucalyptus essential oils to make it more decadent and spa-like.
  4. APPLY HAND CREAM NIGHTLY:  Our bodies rejuvenate while we sleep, so apply a moisture rich hand cream every night.  Set the bottle on your nightstand so you never forget. (note to self!!)  Look for hand creams with alpha hydroxy, retinols, lactic acid and hyaluronic acid.  You can also take it a step further and wear those thin white spa gloves to bed to lock in the moisture.
  5. HOT OIL TREATMENT OR PARAFFIN WAX:  Heat a 1/2 cup of olive oil to lukewarm and soak hands for 5 minutes for a quick fix.  Rinse with water only and pat dry.  Use a drop of olive oil or coconut oil on the cuticles during the day as well.  If you have more time (like during a movie) wrap your oil covered hands with plastic, then put socks over the plastic.  Your hands will feel like a baby’s bottom!  Vaseline can also be used, but I prefer the healthy nutrients in the olive oil.  If your nail salon provides paraffin treatments, I highly recommend getting one on a regular basis or you can invest in a home machine for under $40 or so.

If you are in your 20’s, please please please start doing these tips NOW!  I wish I had started sooner, but better late than never.

Take care of yourselves ladies!

MY NEW BFF: Coconut Oil

Coconut20oil202

I just have a quick, but very important beauty + health tip today….

I recently mentioned coconut oil (my new BFF) on the Facebook Community and several ladies commented and shared their favorite way to use it.  Ok, so I guess coconut oil has lots of BFF’s.  I’m glad to hear it because this stuff is amazing internally and externally.  Many of you here on the blog are not “facebookers” so I wanted to make sure you got this great info as well.

I have been using coconut oil for the past few years, but only on occasion.  I would use it in the winter as a deep conditioning treatment on my hair or as a moisturizer on my skin when it was super dry, but that was about it. Recently, I have been cooking with it more and it’s delish!  Substitute it for the cooking oil you are currently using.  I switch off between the coconut oil and EVOO.  The list of health benefits from coconut oil is a mile long:

  • hair care
  • skin care
  • stress relief
  • maintaining cholesterol levels
  • weight loss
  • increased immunity
  • proper digestion and metabolism
  • relief from kidney problems
  • heart diseases
  • high blood pressure
  • diabetes
  • HIV and cancer
  • dental care
  • bone strength

The benefits of coconut oil can be attributed to the presence of lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid, and its properties such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial and soothing properties. (http://www.organicfacts.net)  It even worked on my chihuahua’s hotspots.  I tried several different natural home remedies as well as over-the-counter lotions on her skin and nothing worked as fast as coconut oil.   Make sure to get organic virgin coconut oil that has not been bleached, refined or hydrogenated.

Be beautiful inside + out!
