[With my on-camera coaching client and friend, Stefani Threadgill on her CW33 TV taping]
Hey Sista,
As I was cleaning up my messy desk today, I came across this notecard I had saved a few years ago. It made me think of a powerful experience I had yesterday with a few other ladybosses. The notecard does not say who the writer is, but it could have come directly from me:
“I am that woman. I have a brilliant heart & a beautiful mind.
I am me, a perfectly flawed, beautyFULL work in progress.
I promise to lift women up, have their backs & make it safe for them to be exactly WHO THEY ARE.
I’m on a MISSION to raise the standards for how we treat each other, how we treat ourselves, and how we treat the world.
Every time I look in the mirror I’ll remind myself that I’m not alone, that I’m beautiful, that my voice matters &
that I AM ENOUGH.”
I encourage you to print that out as a reminder. If you have been following SOS for a while, you know this is my mission and it has been a beautiful experience to go out in the field and work more 1×1 with women. To see women in action, pushing past their fears, living this mantra, and stepping into their purpose is mind-blowing.
My on-camera coaching client Stefani is one of the hardest working women I know! She was given her own segment on the hit CW33 show NewsFix and hired me to sharpen her on-camera presence. She is a brilliant sex therapist with a dream to reach more people and save marriages.
With any dream there are many components that go into it. For television, the list is endless from your voice, delivery, content, energy, charisma, makeup, hair, wardrobe and on and on. I have been on a zillion sets with a zillion producers, makeup artists, stylists, camera operators, etc. Just one of those people can have a bad vibe and wreck your flow. That’s an overall life lesson in who you surround yourself with and why I have copied Oprah’s quote and posted it on the right side bar of this blog, “Be responsible for the energy you bring to this space.”
[With MUA Daniela Bell]
Yesterday, Stefani had a big tape day and knocked it out of the park. My amazing makeup artist friend, Daniela- owner of The Makeup Zone– did her makeup so beautifully. The collaborative effort was total perfection! Back to this part of the above quote:
Lift women up, have their backs & make it safe for them to be exactly WHO THEY ARE.
I left the shoot with tears in my eyes. Not just because I was a proud coach, but proud to be part of something so special and witnessing a purpose-driven woman step into her greatness. Regardless of our profession, shouldn’t we all strive to be THAT type of woman? I challenge each of you to be more conscious and intentional about lifting women up. The first step is to stop being so self-absorbed and stop making everything about you. Sorry, not sorry, if that pisses you off. We have enough pressure and things that tear us down. Don’t add to that problem. Help eradicate it.
In my on-camera confidence workshops, I teach women to change their physicality to get out of their heads before stepping on set or on stage to speak. Loved catching Stefani do her “Wonder Woman Pose” before filming started. This works and helps you go in to any stressful situation. I like to flip my head over and shake my hair and always pull my shoulders back and WALK TALL. Do you have a quick physical confidence builder?
Make it a daily habit to lift, compliment, hug, smile and empower other women.
