BEING MISS THRIFTY IS STYLISH & SMART: A Day In My Life

Happy Sunday Sistas!

Since moving to Dallas, my husband has been in and out of town every month with his CD launch and we haven’t had much time to explore this fab city. Since he was in town for the 4th of July weekend, I decided to introduce him (and reintroduce myself) to all that Dallas has to offer. I love to just get in the car and go on excursions without a hard set schedule. We knew we wanted to have a chill day with some browsing, nibbles and I wanted to get in some thrift shopping.

We started at Bishop Arts District which has changed and grown since I last lived here. This charming, Austin-esque area has some of my favorite eateries as well as eclectic shops and vintage stores. Grab brunch at Oddfellows or dinner at Tillman’s Road House. Tillman’s private dining room is amazing with real trees lining the walls. One of the best meals I’ve ever had. Put this on your to-do list when visiting Big D!

One of my favorite things to do when I lived in Dallas 15 years ago was thrift shopping. The greater DFW area has fantastic thrift and vintage stores. Yesterday was my first opportunity to go hunting – and bless my hubby’s heart – he was so patient. I’m sure thrift shopping is comparable to getting teeth pulled without anesthesia for a man. He was not only patient, he asked Siri where the best locations were!

One of my intentions for the Summer is making the time to read more. I have ordered a few new titles off Amazon, but the very best place to get books is Goodwill. I’ve mentioned this on the blog before and several of you commented that you also shop there for your books. Well, yesterday – my thrifty shopping angels were on it and led us to a gigantic Goodwill where I found 13 hardcover books at only $2 a pop. HOLLA! I found books to fill many of my interests from leadership and spirituality titles from John C. Maxwell, Max Lucado, Sarah Ban Breathnach, M.Scott Peck MD, Thomas Moore and John Eldredge to Suze Orman’s financial wisdom to a few biographies of successful female TV hosts. I also love giving away the small, but powerful reads by Bruce Wilkinson on the message of John 15 and the Prayer of Jabez so I pick up extra copies whenever I find them.

I was excited to find that my favorite Dallas Salvation Army on Harry Hines was still open and guess what I found there? Three beautiful silk scarves in gorgeous Summer colors for a whopping $8 total. Can I get a double… Holla, Holla! Although thrift shopping takes some skill, a good eye and high tolerance for that funky “vintage smell” – it is so fun and rewarding when you score! Most books average $26 retail and I got 13 for the same price. A good quality silk scarf will run you from $30-300 depending on the brand. So, being thrifty is both stylish and smart, sista!

We still have so much to explore in Dallas, but for our first jaunt around town- it was a total success!  We ended the day hydrating and snacking on the best chips & salsa on the planet at Rafa’s on Lovers Lane. Add it to your list when visiting! You can’t visit any city in Texas without indulging on their best Tex Mex.

Who loved the styling on Charlie’s Angels

For Summer, one of my favorite go-to styles is the retro 70’s look. It’s timeless and always in style! Just about everyone can rock this look, effortlessly. With the temps heating up, our hair can get unruly so throwing it up in a headscarf will give you instant glamour while keeping cool. In the selfie above, I simply swept my rolled hair to one side and threw on a scarf. I was attending a b-day party that was tentatively planned for outdoors and didn’t want my hair blowing all over the place. If you’ve been part of SOS for a while, you know I am a HUGE headscarf fan. It’s probably because I’m lazy when it comes to styling my hair during Summer and this is truly a hair SOS rescue! Many of you express you can’t quite get it right so I encourage you to grab some scarves in different sizes and play around with them this weekend. It just takes a bit of creativity!

Here are several ways to rock a headscarf:

Video Replay:

1. Wide Legged Jeans like these at Nordstrom

2. Flowy Crochet Top. Forever 21 has lots of styles.

3. Target has beautiful, affordable maxi sundresses.

4. Jumpsuit like this one from Michael Kors

5. Nordstrom has great metallic heels.

6. Chic floppy hat like this one by J. Crew

This weekend I’m heading on our first family vacay in years. I’m excited to chill with my parents, sis & hubby. We’re heading to the spot in West Texas where we went camping as kids! I’m so excited for Aaron to see that part of the state and for all of us to go offline & unplug for a few days. No makeup, cabin, cutoffs & flip flops. Instead of my inner disco diva, I’ll be unleashing my inner redneck hippie chick!

Where are YOU headed on your Summer vacay?

Don’t forget to strut.

END OF MAY SOS BEAUTY/STYLE/INSPIRATION

Hey Style Sistas!

WOOHOO!  It’s officially Summer and as the temps continue to heat up, here’s a few tips for staying cool and looking fabulous, plus some inspiration for the week ahead:

WRAP THAT HAIR UP!

Tiff_leopard_headscarf

Regardless of your hair length, it can get so sticky and uncomfortable, plus the humidity can have you looking like a wet mop during summer.  There are so many ways to keep it off your neck without reverting to the boring old ponytail.  This summer, the Retro 50’s look is everywhere from swimsuits, rolled up jeans, cat eye shades and headscarfs–which you all know is MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE!   Channel your inner Old Hollywood actress like Sophia Loren or Audrey Hepburn and play around with scarves.  Check out my Pinterest Board on headscarves for more ideas and inspiration.

SPRAY THAT FACE!

rosepetalsrosewater

Keep a bottle of aromatherapy hydrating spray nearby at all times during the hot months.  I even keep a small travel size bottle in my purse!  When you’re skin is feeling parched, spritz it on your face, neck, decolletage and down your arms.  My favorite is the Rose Water by Heritage Products.  There are also easy DIY recipes by adding your favorite essential oils, pure aloe vera juice, cucumber or lemon to distilled water.

HOLDING HANDS {Women Supporting Women}

Christine_Handay_Headscarf copy{Heidi + Christine- Shortly after Christine finished her final round of chemo}

I posted this photo on Facebook and it made such an impact on the community that I wanted to share it with you all on the blog as well.  Since the very beginning of SOS, I have received SEVERAL private messages and emails from women all over the world asking for prayer because they either just found a lump in their breast and were getting the first biopsy or from women who were deep into chemo and starting to lose their hair.  I know we are all profoundly effected by this disease either directly or indirectly.  When my bestie Heidi sent me this photo of her and our friend Christine- I just stared at it for a few minutes and then teared up.  Christine has spent the past year going through triple the amount of chemo rounds.  As you can imagine this photo spoke to me.  There is so much love, grace, strength and courage all over this photo.  The radiant smile on Christine’s face says it all.  She looks so happy, vibrant and beautiful!

Chemo takes such a toll on the body, mind, spirit and confidence level.  Thank God– hair always grows back, but if you have ever cut your hair too short (my hand raised), you know what a grueling process it can be.  With a  few fake lashes, a great wig, hat or headscarf, women recovering after chemo should be able to get out there and enjoy life again instead of suffering behind closed doors because of the toll chemo has taken on her appearance.

Heidi, being the creative fashionista that she is, showed Christine my webisode on Hats and Headscarves then helped her create this fabulous headband with hair extensions attached which can be worn under hats, caps and scarves.  How hot does she look?!  ROCK ON SISTA!

Do you know someone in the midst of a battle of some kind?  Financial hardship?  Chemo?  Divorce?  Infertility?  Abuse?  Help a sista out!  Reach out.  Hold a hand.  Lend an ear.  When women support each other, it not only changes us and those closest to us…. it changes the world!  When we pour love, support and positivity into others and hold a woman’s hand when she needs it….it can literally save her life.  I am SO grateful for my nearest and dearest girlfriends for always being there for me during hard times.  I don’t even want to think where I would be without them!  I’m imagining myself having not bathed for days, curled up in a ball, hugging a pillow in a corner and sucking my thumb or something.  Ahhhhhh– SCARY!

Here’s a repost of the webisode! I encourage you to share it with any girlfriends who are needing creative ways to stay fashionable and confident while they are going through chemo.

I want to thank all of you for being part of this community of empowered, spiritually conscious + encouraging women.  Women supporting women is a POWERFUL thing!

LESS catty competitive crap…MORE love, admiration, honoring, support, respect + hand holding!  That’s what SOS is all about.

Love, Tiff

HELLO MARCH {New Style Webisode}

Hey Lovelies,

One of the questions I have been asked the most lately is how to start incorporating some fun Spring items in your wardrobe while it’s still chilly outside.  Here’s 5 simple ways to make a smooth + stylish transition:

Here’s the beauty products I mentioned:

Spring_nailpolish{Bright Nail Polish}

loreal_legloss

{Loreal LeGloss in Watermelon Crush}

Rimmel_kate#17

{Rimmel London Kate Moss Collection #17}

PF_mineral wear blush{Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Blush in Rose}

neutrogena_airbrushtan{Neutrogena Micro Mist Airbrush Self Tanner in DEEP}

Loreal_sublime{Loreal Sublime Bronze in DEEP- gives you instant color + a touch of shimmer}

milani_baked bronzer{Milani Baked Bronzer in Soleil #5}

To celebrate Spring and You, why not treat yourself to a fun new accessory, pair of shoes or at least a new lipgloss this weekend!  It’s funny how happy my new emerald scarf makes me feel.  A scarf is an easy and inexpensive way to spruce up your wardrobe!

Remember to shop your closet before you hit the stores.  There are several styles that are carrying over from the past few seasons.

Share, Like, Tweet + Comment.  I always love to hear from you!

HATS. HEADSCARVES. HOPE.

Hello Gorgeous!

It’s Black Friday- the day all serious shopping addicts can get their “fix” on!  Are you braving the malls today?  If so, are you insane girl?  I truly hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and created special memories with good friends and loved ones.

NEW WEBISODE:

A few viewers have asked me to give some options for cute winter hats while their hair is growing back after chemotherapy and I also show how to tie my signature headscarf look.  I realize this is a sensitive subject, but I believe these brave women should feel as fashionable as possible during this transition.  In 2011, there will be 2.6 million breast cancer survivors so I know this has touched all of our lives directly or indirectly in some way. Celebrating their courage and bravery today!

For Fall 2011, the hat must have- A Floppy Fedora!

OR grab a chic hat with feather accents like this one my BFF, Heidi is wearing by Jessica Simpson!

Have you tried the GLOW DIET?

I have been diligent in eating blueberries every morning and have been adding more kale and sweet potatoes to our meals. Not only does your skin glow, but it amps up your energy too.    Remember, our skin takes a toll in winter with the extreme temp changes from outdoors to indoors with the brutal heaters so take special care of your beautiful face!  Change up your night cream and moisturizers.  Most of you know, I love the Arbonne RE9 line especially their night cream, but wanted to change things up.   For the past 3 weeks, I have been using VICHY’S Liftactiv Retinol HA Night Cream and give it 2 thumbs up.  It has a TRIPLE dose of  Hyaluronic Acid for an intense, stabilized filling action + New Generation Retinol (Retinol+Adenosine Complex) for an accelerated resurfacing effect.  Your skin looks plumper after the first use. SERIOUSLY!  I love the convenience of being able to pick it up at CVS!

I have to share a new beautiful song by my hubby called “My Number One”.  Take a few minutes to listen and be inspired!

“It’s so important to tell those we love how important they are while we have the chance.  My new song, ‘My Number One’ talks about two lives that left this world without knowing, without hearing the words… It’s important today and everyday to tell those we love how much they mean to us”. ~AH
