DETOX TIP #1: Jump Your Way To Feeling Good

IMG_9586

Hey Hey Hotstuff,

For the last few months, I have – to put it bluntly – felt like dog crap! It snuck up on me because early Summer I started a new vitamin and supplement program and was feeling fairly energetic. In August, I felt faint a few times and my energy was like a yo yo. One minute, I felt fine then the next day like I was living life through mud. By the beginning of October, I was beyond fatigued and so foggy brained I was fishing for words. The PMS was intensified (poor Aaron) and I was weepy the week before my period and the week after. Do the math – that means I only had one good week. My weight fluctuated like a blow fish without changing my eating or workout program. Yes, I know at my age the hormones are ever-changing, but there seems to be more to it. With all the beautifully blessed things going on in my life- I want to be fully present to appreciate every minute of it. Not just one week a month. That simply is not God’s plan for how we should live. One of my life verses is John 10:10 which says that He came that we might have life and have it to the full until it overflows. Ummm- overflow means a lot, not just one week a month.

SCREECH!! Slamming on the breaks. No mam, I’ve had enough and this started effecting my work. Part of being a great TV Host is thinking quick on your feet. My head was feeling disconnected and for someone who is high energy and usually super sharp- this just sucks. I listened to the signals my body was giving me and consulted my holistic doctor to find out the root of my issues!

My lifestyle is healthier than most people so how on earth can I feel so lethargic, blue, achy and overall crappy? Ladies, I share this journey with you because I am on a mission to help women live their best and healthiest lives. Transparency about my journey (the good and the bad) is important to me. If I am open about my life and it helps just one of you — mission accomplished. You’ve heard me say this a million times, but – true beauty shines from the inside out. When we feel good, we look good then we can go out and do good in this world. It shocked me to find out from talking to other women that too many are living life with low energy, anxiety, depression and aches. They are misdiagnosed or the doc puts them on an anti-depressant without treating the real issues.

ARE YOU CHECKING IN WITH YOURSELF REGULARLY?

ARE YOU IN TUNE WITH YOUR BODY OR DO YOU IGNORE THE SIGNS?

Many women are living with a combo of thyroid imbalance, clogged lymphatic system, candida (if you wonder what that is, watch my old video) and shot adrenal glands. If you live a high stress and anxious lifestyle, your adrenals are fatigued from working over time. First off, you need to lighten your schedule and remove as many stressors as you can. I was told that living in a high stress, congested city like Los Angeles as long as I did would definitely fatigue my adrenals. I found out this is exactly the combo of issues that I am dealing with. When both your  thyroid and adrenals are out of whack- EVERYTHING in your body goes out of whack!  I also found out that I’m “chronically dehydrated”. This was puzzling because I thought I was good about drinking water. Ask all my friends- I go everywhere with a large water bottle filled with water. When the body is dehydrated, it is a breeding ground for all kinds of bacteria buildup and infection. Just like a stagnant pool of water.

WHAT AM I GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?

There are several simple holistic methods to balance the body. I admit, since moving to Texas- I have veered from my strict health program. Shame on me!  On top of that when life gets too busy, our health and well being are the first to suffer. This week I began a detox program and happy to say- I am already feeling a bit better. Over the next few weeks, I will share some of my detox activities, but if you are having serious issues, please talk to you doc.

DETOX TIP #1: REBOUNDING (jumping on a mini trampoline

Your mom may have had one of these in the 80’s. Remember the Jazzercise craze and high cut leotards? Well, this is actually one of the very best exercises for overall vitality and stimulating the lymphatic system. The lymph system bathes every cell carrying nutrients to the cell and waste products away. The lymph is totally dependent on physical exercise to get it moving! It’s the best 15-20 minutes you can do for your body daily. I jump after my morning devotional time while I’m catching up on the news. A cup of coffee, green smoothie and 15 minute rebounding session gets my day started off with plenty of energy. I can literally feel the oxygen flood my body. It’s amazing!  I researched several brands and chose the Gold’s Gym 36″ Circuit Trainer – shown above. It is quick and easy to assemble, lightweight and super sturdy. If you kept it in your bedroom, it would slide easily under the bed.

Here’s the 411:

The lymphatic system is the metabolic garbage can of the body. It rids you of toxins such as dead and cancerous cells, nitrogenous wastes, infectious viruses, heavy metals, and other assorted junk cast off by the cells. The movement performed in rebounding provides the stimulus for a free-flowing system that drains away these potential poisons.

Without adequate movement, the cells are left stewing in their own waste products and starving for nutrients, a situation that contributes to arthritis, cancer and other degenerative diseases. Vigorous exercise such as rebounding [jumping on a therapeutic mini-trampoline] is reported to increase lymph flow by 15 to 30 times. Also, bones become stronger with exercise.

Vertical motion workouts such as rebounding are much different and much more beneficial and efficient than horizontal motion workouts, such as jogging or running.

It is important to realize that as you age, your body may become more toxic due to the pollutants in today’s world. It is also important to realize that if you have a disease, your cellular structure is compromised, as your cells are already being robbed of the correct oxygen, mineral and nutrient compounds that they need to stay healthy.via Wellbeingjournal.com

LIST OF 10 BENEFITS:

  1. 20 minutes of rebounding = 1 hour of running for cardiovascular workout
  2. Strengthens the heart muscle
  3. Great for skeletal system and increasing bone mass
  4. Helps improve digestion
  5. Increases endurance on a cellular level by stimulating mitochondrial production (these are responsible for cell energy)
  6. Improves balance by stimulating the vestibule in the middle ear
  7. Helps circulate oxygen throughout the body to increase energy
  8. Improves muscle tone throughout the body
  9. Helps support the thyroid and adrenals
  10. Helps improve the effects of other exercising

Please take care of yourself sista. Life is short and we are only given one body to carry us through. I want to enjoy all of it!  Be conscious of what you are putting in your mouth and drink half your body weight in ouches of water daily.

Your body is a Temple, not a Trash can.

Don’t worry- we still have the style videos on the schedule I just need to focus on this program and sorting it all out right now. I’m excited to find out the issues and make the changes, then share those findings with you.

SHARE. LIKE. COMMENT.

I would love to hear from you and if you’ve dealt with any of these issues.

Happy Jumping!

Love, Tiff

OH TO BE OR NOT TO BE HYPER? By My Sis- Aesthetician & Wellness Warrior Natalie Bolton

Natalie_hyperpig_2

Oh the perks of youth…remember the hours and hours of hyper play in the summer sun? Oh, those were the days. Then something happens when we get older. We not only reminisce of those long summer days where perfect moments seemed to drag out like glorious dreamy memories; we also long for that energy we once had. That hyper excitement that would ignite with the simplest adventure was always available in full supply. Be it a new bike trail with your best friend Shelly or walking down by the murky river with your other best friend Becky; the average Tuesday afternoon would never disappoint. What else never disappointed?

That energy.

That enthusiasm.

That hyper, ready and willing anticipation for all things play.

Notice how I keep repeating the word Hyper. Not only do we miss the energy of our childhoods, but also somehow that gift of boundless hyper energy got traded in for hyper-pigmentation.

And here begins our post:

What is hyper pigmentation you might ask? This is Wikipedia’s definition:

“In dermatology, hyper pigmentation is the darkening of an area of skin or nails caused by increased melanin.

Hyper pigmentation may be caused by sun damage, inflammation, or other skin injuries, including those related to acne vulgaris.[1] People with darker Asian, Mediterranean, or African skin tones are also more prone to hyper pigmentation, especially if they have excess sun exposure.”

melasma_face_woman{Photo courtesy of http://www.catherinehinds.edu}

Ok, in layman’s terms hyper pigmentation is more popularly called melasma (pregnancy mask), or liver/age/sun spots, and even “discoloration” from acne scars can contribute. These examples are only a few names for discoloration yet the list goes on and on. And to us…it is simply the highly annoying, splotchy, uncoverable, every-time-we-look-in-the-mirror-this-is-all-we-see BS that has us feeling less than amazing. This is hyper pigmentation.

So, it seems to be one of the many cruel jokes Mother Nature plays on us as we go from the spry vigor of youth to the seemingly forever-fracturing de-perfectioning process of aging.

But not all hope is lost. There are options, ladies. There are options.

And lucky for you, you are reading this post NOW. For this is the season of the peel.

PEELS are nature’s little way of offering us a little help where needed. A few benefits of having a peel can be brightening, improving skin texture, wrinkle reduction, and many other juicy nuggets of wonderment.

Enter option 1. THE ACID PEEL. (Aka my trusty “3 mask-eteers” I like to call them)- The Alpha Hydroxy Acids or AHA’s for short.

These are my most commonly used agents that I enlist in my protocol.

1-Glycolic acid-derived from sugarcane

2-Lactic acid-derived from milk (watch out if you are lactose intolerant)

3-Kojic acid-derived from mushrooms

Being Native American, Asian, and Eastern European I have a mixture of skin tones that benefit GREATLY from glycolic peels. Being olive or darker than average in color it lands me at a IV rating on the Fitzpatrick scale*. This means that I do tend to easily be a victim of hyper pigmentation. Cuts tend to want to scar more easily, and I could be more prone to acne scarring as well. So, glycolic on me is MAGIC! The molecule in glycolic is the smallest out of this acid family so it penetrates the deepest. Word UP! It’s awesome and I love it on my skin. Glycolic works on fairer tones as well. Most of my clients that are in the business of wanting a peel also dig the time-tested glycolic.

Lactic acid has the same benefits that glycolic has and is also less irritating and more hydrating. But if you are allergic to milk STEER CLEAR of this treatment and opt for another AHA option. So if you feel your skin is more sensitive (and you’re ok with milk products) talk to your esthetician about Lactic acid being your option.

Then there’s Kojic acid.

Kojic is a stellar skin lightening agent. Kojic acid literally stops melanin production therefore slowing and stopping the darkening of your skin. If you’re on hydroquinone, drop that crap like a bad knock-off Prada bag and talk to your esthetician about investing in Kojic acid treatments instead. Kojic is great for people with sensitive skin and the benefits over using hydroquinone are too much to list here.

It is always great to start a series of peels in the winter months, as we tend to be out in the sun less therefore reducing the risk of excessive sun-exposure. You never want to commit to peels in the summer as you are going to the beach, going on vacation, or still mastering (after all these years) the art of laying out on your roof. SUN SUN SUN…the enemy to peels. So, ALWAYS opt for winter sessions… AND ALWAYS ALWAYS WEAR SUN PROTECTION as your skin will be more sensitive to the sun and you could potentially make worse the very issue you are trying to correct.

Talk to your professional about your allergies, risks, and the basic pros and cons of starting these treatments. And research for yourself which options would be best for you.

As for before, when I was hating on Mother Nature…I do it in pure fun. My true belief system is that we are constantly in a miraculous state of rejuvenation and repair. Our bodies, organs, and systems are so mind-bendingly intelligent that that self-correcting intelligence is within every function of our trillions and trillions of cells. So, I encourage you to err on the side of gratitude and acknowledgment for your beautiful skin, your intelligent internal system function, and your own ability to self heal. Our cells are always begging to thrive, not the other way around. If you find yourself a little unhappy with a condition you may be facing when looking in the mirror perhaps with loving thoughts and a little direction your cells will realign and recalibrate for the most optimal reflection possible. Your cells are programmed by the very thoughts you feed them. Feed them healthy thoughts. There is enough junk food in the world.

And if you are still a little gun-shy in the peel department, stay tuned for option 2 and 3 in the very near future.

You shine brighter than you think you do. Thank you for the light you share in this world.

*Google Fitzpatrick scale to determine your own rating.

AMP UP YOUR ENERGY: Ba-Bye Gluten

HAPPY FRIDAY FAB FRIENDS!

gluten.foods.gi

I trust you are all catching your breath after a wirlwind few weeks of gift giving, family gatherings and celebrations. Have you taken some time to regroup, refuel and get some rest? Maybe this weekend will be your first opportunity. I encourage you to take some “Me” time, get caught up on sleep, hydrate with lots of water and fill your body with some healthy, antioxidant rich foods. Start next week feeling energized and shake off that sluggish holiday feeling from all the indulgence. My mom outdid herself with cooking and baking this Christmas and I’m SO grateful, but I’m ready to start a light detox/cleanse myself and back to my no dairy, no wheat/gluten, no sugar diet.

ARE YOU CONFUSED ABOUT THE GLUTEN-FREE CRAZE?

About 7-8 years ago, by the process of elimination, I figured out that I had an intolerance to wheat & gluten. I had already found out that I was lactose intolerant in my mid 20’s. Since then, I paid close attention to how foods made me feel. After eating bread or pasta dishes, I would literally get a stuffed up nose, itchy eyes, foggy head, felt sleepy and had a bloated stomach. Obviously, I just stopped eating the stuff then a few years later all this research surfaced about food allergies. Here’s a quick description from Allure.com that may enlighten you:

The Skinny: Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. Translation: It’s in practically everything. For starters, bread, pasta, cereal, and crackers, plus beer, some salad dressings, soups, and soy sauce. Gluten-free adherents learn to love alternative grains like amaranth, buckwheat, quinoa, and rice, but only those with a wheat allergy or, more seriously, celiac disease must strictly comply. When they eat gluten, it sets off an immune reaction that damages the lining of the small intestine, causing diarrhea, gas, bloating, and other symptoms: irritability, muscle cramps, skin rashes, anemia, plus a risk of developing intestinal cancer. (A blood test and an intestinal biopsy can confirm a celiac diagnosis.) Celiac disease affects about 3 million people in the U.S., but far more—as many as 20 million—have gluten sensitivity; bread or pasta leaves them bloated, foggy, depressed, and headachy. “Some people eat gluten safely for 20, 30, or 40 years, then suddenly develop a problem,” says Alessio Fasano, director of the Center for Celiac Research at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Since no reliable sensitivity test is yet available, the only way to determine whether your malaise is gluten-related is to try the diet and see if you feel better—which should be apparent within a few days.

Benefits: Those with celiac or pronounced gluten sensitivity will see the most improvement. “Brain fog, bloating, and headaches should go away immediately,” says Fasano. “Many people feel remarkably better.” Some look better, too, since gluten sensitivity can trigger an inflammatory response that leads to acne, rosacea, or eczema, according to Fredric Brandt, a cosmetic dermatologist in Miami and New York City. But if you don’t have true gluten sensitivity, you’re not likely to notice any changes to your mood, skin, or gut.

Drawbacks: You could pack on the pounds. “It used to be that a gluten-free diet almost assured weight loss, because there were very few alternatives except for fruits and vegetables,” says Susan Bowerman, assistant director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition. But thanks to the gluten-free trend, there is now a glut of G-free muffins, pies, cakes, and pizzas. Some of these substitutes are more caloric than their standard counterparts, because manufacturers use corn or potato starch to add texture. Another problem? Avoiding gluten can set you up for a vitamin deficiency, since wheat is rich in thiamine and other Bs, says Cynthia Kupper, executive director of the Gluten Intolerance Group of North America. “B vitamins are important for the health of your hair, skin, brain, and nerves,” she says. “So you may pay a price if you’re not careful.” The other way you’ll pay: G-free foods can cost two or three times as much as conventional ones.

Bottom Line: The gluten intolerant now have a greater variety of appealing choices than ever. Everyone else: Skip the diet and count your blessings.

FEELING FOGGY? FATIGUED? OVERALL FUNKY?

A few years ago on a Christmas trip to Australia, I found out I had this crazy thing called CANDIDA! Hmmm, what the heck is that, you ask?   After indulging on my Mother-in-Law‘s ridiculously delish homebaked breads and cakes, a friend of mine recommended I “juice” for a few days to get my system rebalanced.  He gave me a juice of apple, carrot, celery, a few other things I can’t remember along with a serious helping of ginger.   It was so hot and tangy I could barely drink it, but being the brave girl I am…I downed the entire glass of this concoction.

A few hours later during dinner, my hubby looked at me and said “babe, what’s going on with your lips?”  I was itchy all over and so uncomfortable.  I pulled out a mirror and my lips looked like Eddie Murphy‘s in the Nutty Professor.  You know the scene when he’s turning into his alter ego and his body parts are all huge and morphed!   I did have a brief Angelina Jolie moment!  By the time we got home from dinner, I had hives all over my body.  Our friend said, that looks like a candida reaction to the ginger.  HUH?  He explained that candida was an overgrowth of yeast which feeds and grows off the sugars in our bodies.  It can cause fatigue, a lethargic feeling and overall sluggish energy.   With a few simple lifestyle changes like eating more yogurt and reducing starches and sugars, candida can easily be kept under control.

My sister, Natalie,  also battles keeping her candida under control and just went on a great cleanse which she shares in the latest webisode.  She’s candid about how the cleanse gave her a bad case of smelly feet!  Pewww!

SYMPTOMS:
Insomnia
Joint and muscle pain
Persistent gas and bloating
Recurrent bladder infections
Recurrent vaginal yeast infections
Sinus problems
Sugar cravings
Bad breath
Blurred vision
