GET OFF YOUR LAZY BOOTIE: 2 Steps To Changing Habits

Breaking bad habits

“Your beliefs become your thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.”

― Mahatma Gandhi

Hey Hey Beautiful!

It’s the first day of December and I’ve started my end-of-year ritual of reflection and introspection. With exactly 30 days left in 2016 and 2017 around the corner, it’s easy to go into freak out mode because we may have missed the mark and didn’t achieve all that we had planned for the year. I admit, I felt a mini panic coming on yesterday so I forced myself to reflect on how much I did achieve. It’s all about what you focus on! 2016 was a BIG year for my husband and I, but how easily do we focus on what we didn’t get done. Today, I awoke with a better perspective and look forward to the new opportunities 2017 will offer.

Over the next month, I challenge you to reflect on how the past year turned out, before jumping into something new.

Think about this… your life this past year has been a result of all of your habits, both good and bad. (OUCH!!)

And the habits you decide to eliminate, change, and improve upon will ultimately determine your level of success in 2017.

Now ask yourself this…

What habits are keeping you from achieving your goals and becoming the person you want to be?

I really want you to be honest with yourself and think about this. For example: I admit, due to building my brand myself without a team (getting a team together is one of my 2017 goals) I spend too much time on social media. It’s been a challenge to schedule my social media time.  I always plan to post content and get off, BUT how often do we see a post that leads us to whatever is tagged then you go over to that account and on and on. Yikes, you’ve lost 30 minutes and you could have used that time to get in that cardio you’ve been meaning to do. Who feels me? Another example of a habit I need to change– getting in enough cardio! I swear, I talk to myself sometimes and say, “Tiff get off your lazy a$$”.  Seriously.

I’ve been diving into great books and listening to my favorite motivators and thought leaders. This morning I opened this email from Jack Canfield and was absolutely meant to read his latest blog– see below. Thought you would enjoy the kick in the bootie too!

The reality is that you – and the life you lead today – are the result of your habits. Changing habits can seem difficult to accomplish at first, but success is a result of your habits.

If you think about it, you’re living out your habits every day. From how early you get out of bed, to your morning routine, how you dress, walk, exercise, interact with others and even what you habitually think about and how you respond to the world.

These habits got you to where you are today…

The fact is that habits are necessary. They free up your mind so you can concentrate on how to survive day to day. For instance, you don’t have to think about how to drive your car – which allows you instead to be on the lookout for danger while you’re driving.

Unfortunately, habits can also keep you locked in self-destructive patterns, which limit your success. Becoming successful is a result of changing habits. You’ll need to eliminate bad habits and develop new ones that are in alignment with the life you want to live.

The life you want to live won’t just materialize one day… your habits determine your outcomes!

What is Keeping You From Achieving Your Goals?

What are the habits that you live with every day that are keeping you from achieving your goals?

What habits are keeping you from achieving your goals?

I encourage you to be really honest with yourself here…

  • Are you always running late?
  • Do you forget to return phone calls within 24 hours?
  • Do you stay up late and never get enough sleep?
  • Do you often break promises to your friends and family?
  • Do you resist planning out your day?
  • Do you spend money you don’t have?
  • Do you avoid putting important tasks and events in your calendar?
  • Do you drink alcohol more than once a week – and do you have more than two drinks per day?

Imagine the Result of You Changing Habits

  • What would your life be like if you ate healthy meals, exercised and got enough sleep?
  • What if you saved your money, stopped using credit cards, and paid cash for everything?
  • What if you stopped procrastinating, overcame your fears, and began networking with people in your field?
  • What if you created a detailed annual plan for success – then chunked it down into monthly, weekly, and daily plans to ensure you stayed on track to achieving your goals?

Would your life be different if you changed your habits? I bet it would!

The 2 Steps to Changing Habits

My suggested action step for you is to write down some productive habits you couldvisualize, then adopt in your life. Step two is to ‘act as if’ you were living these new habits right now!

To help you get moving toward creating more successful habits right away, I’d like to recommend that you develop four new success habits each year, one for each quarter.

Once you determine the new habit you’re ready to adopt, next you’ll want to create a method that will support your new habit.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • You could write it down on a card that you keep with you and read several times a day.
  • You could make it a part of your daily visualization.
  • You could also enlist the help of an accountability partner who has habits they also want to change, or work with a personal coach who can keep you on track.

Make a 100% Commitment to You New Habit

It’s important to make a 100% commitment to your new habit, so be specific about the steps that you’re willing to take in order to drop an old habit and adopt a new one. Don’t be vague about how you will change your habits. Spell it out for yourself so you can put yourself in situations that will motivate you to act upon your new habit.

Just developing four good habits a year will dramatically shift your life to be more in line with achieving your vision. And the more focused you are, the easier your other, not-so-good habits will be to replace. Your perspective will shift and you’ll see more clearly how your old habits just aren’t serving you anymore.

Make the decision. Make the commitment. Then watch your new, positive life unfold!

I want to leave you with a bit of homework to complete after you’re done reading. Write down the four habits that you want to develop over the next year. Make a 100% commitment to each of your new habits and watch great things happen.

Leave a comment below and tell me which new habit you have in mind to develop first.

Changing habits in 2017 starts with a fresh set of goals using my 12-Month Success Planner. I designed this planner to help you plan exactly how to tackle daily challenges and achieve your goals. Use it to get a jump on the new year.

DEBUNKING DETOX: Look Good, Feel Good, Do Good

lookgood

Hey 2016- you’re looking mighty sexy from here!

Who is ready to look, feel and do better than they did last year? If you answered with a loud YES with your hand waving in the air then you’re in the right spot. For the month of January, I go into a nesting and cleansing mode. It’s important to me to dedicate the first month of the year to getting prepared. I have GRAND plans for 2016 and want to clear the appropriate spaces for the GREATNESS to come.

Who needs to clear some clutter and cobwebs?

Why carry last years BS into the new year!?

I cleanse my mind by reading and journaling my thoughts on the changes I plan to make. I cleanse my body and detox. (I’m on Day 10 of no alcohol) I cleanse my house by throwing out the clutter. I cleanse my spirit by listening to powerful spiritual leaders and focusing on my connection to God. December felt like one big party so I decline invitations this month without guilt. Who else is partied out? I’m ready to get to work and I’m not just referring to job and career. Working on yourself and investing in you is the best work you can put in!

You all know I went through a major detox a few months ago. People were both interested and scratching their heads at my plan. A few people even laughed at me! I look at it as a much needed tune up! We can’t look, think, do and feel our best if our body is running on fumes and breaking down. I also wanted to understand the true meaning of a detox and found this article. Take it all with a grain of salt! Knowledge is power:

INTENTION CREATES REALITY {Sunday Affirmations}

intention

HAPPY SUNDAY SISTAS!

How was your first week of 2014? Were you able to get in some quiet time to set your intentions, goals and/or resolutions? I spent several days working on mine. Remember, it’s great to take your time with this task- even if it takes you a few weeks. I also had an empowering 3 hour ‘mastermind’ meeting with a trusting friend so we could share our goals with each other. This creates accountability and sets you up for success in a bigger way! This also activates creativity in each of you to come up with ideas to help one another achieve these goals.

Are you wondering what it means to set an intention?  I believe it’s basically making up your mind what you want. How often do you hem & haw about things?  It is so powerful when we get clear, get focused and make up our minds. Then, the real power is in the follow through.  I also believe we are setting intentions when we pray and share with God what we want a desired outcome to be.  Let’s look at intentions without follow through.  How often do we say things like…Oh, I intended to call youOh, it was my intention to lose 5 lbs before summer…I’m sorry I hurt your feelings it was not my intent??  It feels pretty crappy, right?  Let’s get to following through, shall we?

I see the word intention as a fancy name for GOAL– but, with an added oomph of Spiritual Power behind it.  Without intentions for our life, we tend to wander.  If you feel like you have lost direction and are wandering through life, here are 5 steps to setting intentions:

  1. DECIDE.  What do you want the outcome to be?  It’s as simple as that.  Making the decision is a huge first step!
  2. WRITE IT OUT.  Make it official by writing your intentions in your journal or putting up sticky notes in places you can see them on a regular basis.  I have sticky notes on the sides of my computer monitor, bathroom mirror and fridge.  This is a powerful daily reminder to keep your thoughts going in the right direction.
  3. SHARE.  Find a trusting friend/mentor or group to hold your intentions with you.  By sharing your desired outcome with others, you create a “mastermind” of positive thoughts.  One of my favorite books is “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill.  His definition of a mastermind is– “Coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony between two or more people, for the attainment of a definite purpose.”  Make sure to share with those of a like-minded spirit and steer clear of anyone who may try to sabotage your goals or be unsupportive.
  4. LIVE IT.  Act as if your outcome is here NOW!  Speak as if it’s here.  Your words and actions have a powerful effect so be mindful of what you are doing, thinking and saying.  Get committed!
  5. NEVER GIVE UP.  Period.

I know what you are thinking right now– Hey Tiff,  so what’s the difference between affirmations and intentions?  They are marriage partners, first cousins, Batman + Robin!  Affirmations are basically spoken intentions.  They are the daily statements we declare over our lives based on our intentions.  They help you course correct when you tend to wander.  Affirmations and intentions are the power combo to creating the life of your dreams!  Add in specific actions, prayer and a vision board then WATCH OUT– you are destined for success!

THIS WEEK I WILL….

  1. Really think about what I want.
  2. Make up my mind already.
  3. Stop hemming + hawing.
  4. Set intentions for 2014.
  5. Share my intentions with a trusting friend.
  6. Join or create a mastermind group.
  7. Act as if my goals/intentions are here now.
  8. Step out of fear into faith.
  9. Open myself to receive success.
  10. Pray for guidance.
  11. Claim that I am destined for..and deserve the life of my dreams!

What are your intentions for 2014?

Don’t Sweat It, Girl! How to be Stress-Free in 2013 by Guest Blogger- Ryan Rivera

Hi Steel Magnolias!  Happy New Year!

Many of you have written in and expressed that you’re battling anxiety and panic attacks.  I have been there girlfriend.  The first time I had a panic attack about 15 years ago, I thought I was dying and it felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest.  The long term physical and emotional pain we experience from anxiety will ultimately rob of us from living the healthy life we deserve!   I’m excited that Ryan Rivera of The Calm Clinic reached out to share his tips with us.  I thought this was the perfect reinforcement we needed as we hit the new year running….

ANXIETY_strength

Modern life and everyday living can be so stressful, and women often find these to be causes for anxiety. Then there is that time of the month when our estrogen levels, which affect our vulnerability and anxiousness, fall below normal. This makes us more prone to emotional roller coasters that severely affect our mood.  On a normal day, we stress ourselves out over trivial matters, and then work or family-related matters add up to the pressure. The next thing you know, you’re totally dazed.

While we can’t really escape the trappings of the daily grind, we can choose to handle it better.  Know which tasks to spend time on and which ones to abandon.  Lighten your load and see how your world can open up and become a more vibrant, positive place.  A lot of women find themselves wallowing in their woes and burdens, feeling incapable of escaping the lives they built for themselves. The truth is that you can always choose to improve your life and not waste time on the petty things that carry the most weight.

Don’t let stress and anxiety render you incapable of living the life you want. You can use both to motivate you to be the best in everything you do, but don’t let it get to you so bad that you start feeling inadequate on a regular basis. Don’t think too much about what other people might say about you, don’t pour over the littlest things, and spend too much time worrying about small issues.  Anxiety can help fuel you at times, but it can also cripple your abilities and prevent you from performing when you let it get to you.

Since hormones don’t really work in our favor, women should remain headstrong and persistent.  It may take more effort for us to be able to move forward and battle the anxiety which could hinder us from getting what we want, but it will be worth it!  Don’t sweat the small stuff and just keep doing what you need to do in order for you to achieve your goals. Never allow anyone or anything to stop you from succeeding in life.

Here are 5 simple and doable things you can do to reduce anxiety:

  1. Exercise. Try signing up for a gym membership or work out on your own just to channel the negative energy that’s pent up in your system.  A good workout will boost your endorphins as well.
  2. Get crafty. Get into a new hobby and learn new skills. Who knows? Something that starts as a hobby could end up a source of income for you. This happens to a lot of people. They earn out of something they love doing.
  3. Rest and relax. Unwind and don’t let yourself be bothered by stressful thoughts. You don’t have to splurge to unwind. It can be a day at the spa, lunch date with friends, or movie date with your loved one.
  4. Form healthy habits.  Eat right and stop the vices.  If you maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle, it will allow you to perform better at work and accomplish tasks more.
  5. Find more things that make you happy.  Open your eyes to the beauty around you.  Focus on the things that make you happy and spend less time focused on the things that stress you out.  Make sure to slow down as well.  There’s power in the saying, “stop and smell the roses”.

Women should not become victims of feelings of anxiety. There is so much more to life than having to go through the pressure of living up to other people’s standards. Do things as you please, and live your life the way you want to.  Create your own ways of fighting off anxiety and you are sure to perform beyond what is expected of you, which can help you live a fulfilled life!

ABOUT RYAN RIVERA, Publisher & Founder of http://www.calmclinic.com

Ryan Rivera has spent 7 years of his life suffering from, as he calls it, the “whole package” – panic attacks, severe anxiety, agoraphobia, social anxiety, unbearable physical symptoms, headaches, neck pains, constant tension, diarrhea, palpitations, pounding heart.  After trying numerous different treatments for his anxiety (including various medication) a tipping-point in his life made him overcome his emotional problems.

Have you found a great method to reduce anxiety? Please comment and share it!

I have learned to keep my schedule light and stop putting too much on my plate.  This has done wonders!  I also turn my phone on silent a few times a day, take a brisk walk and run a hot bath to keep me from going coocoo for cocoa puffs!

Remember, anxiety is often caused by FEAR so by letting go of the fear, you will also let go of your anxiety.   2012 brought a ton of stress for most of us, but we can make a few small tweaks to ensure the new year will be different.

I hope you all had a beautifully blessed Christmas and Santa was super sweet to you!  I really love this time of year because there is a bit of downtime to get organized, set goals for the new year and reflect on any changes I want to make…including changes in my beauty + health routine as well as my wardrobe.  I asked my Fellow Facebook Fashionistas to share any beauty or fashion resolutions they are making for 2012:

  • Dawn Lynn Takacs:  My beauty goal for 2012- This year centering the inner you that reflects the outer you. More “me” time for creative therapy, thought provoking reading, sharing time or just meditating with a fabulous candle. I will find (if only) 20 minutes a day to nurture myself spiritually.
  • Naomi Sampson Westgard: I am going to wear EVERYTHING in my closet at least once!!! Ok….for at least a few hours at a time. If I don’t wear it…it goes!
  • Ellen Stoneberg: To get the courage to wear false eyelashes to work on a daily basis. Something tasteful and not obvious but a little more lampchop (the puppet) like, you know flirty! I want to be more girly.
  • Syera Letiece:  To bring more color to my closet I love bright colors and how they look on my skin. I want to pop and stand out a little more with over doing it. But so that when people see me they know it’s me 🙂
  • Lachele Haines Stoeck:  I am resolving to eat healthier. Not to lose weight but to gain energy and feel stronger!
  • Muffy McKay: I am going to try to buy less and shop my closet more this year.
  • Kirsten Robison: Eat healthier, hair change (it is so time to do so), and try to loose the extra pounds I need to….want to be Hawaii body ready!….and the most important, read my bible more and let the light shine through….more smiles! 🙂
